OWC Chris’s Review

Remember those “Where’s Waldo?” books where you’d look for the guy in the bobble hat and glasses amongst a crowd of people? In the back of the books there’d be a list of other things to find that the artists snuck in there. Time Geeks is kind of like that. The basic game is free, with other options being made available through in-app purchase. Being the cheapskate I am, I just went with the free option.

Using that “isometric projection” pixel art best known from late 1990’s video games and artwork from eBoy, it’s got a bit of a “retro” feel and they’ve liberally sprinkled pop culture references in each scene to make it kind of humorous. Those two make Time Geeks at least fun to look at.

Gameplay is pretty simple – they show you a picture of the character you’re looking for and you have to find where it has been randomly placed within the scene before the timer runs out. About halfway through each scene, there’s a special “bonus.” Sometimes it’s an expansion pack for the “make your own island” feature and sometimes it’s a small minigame having to do with the scene you’re in. Unfortunately, I found both of those options somewhat lackluster when compared to the rest of the game, so they wound up being more of a distraction than anything.

That, however, is the only real downside to this app. The puzzles range from fairly simple to fiendishly difficult and the random placement of the objects you’re looking for gives the game excellent replay value.

I tried both the regular version (on my iPod Touch) and the HD version (on my iPad), and game play is pretty much the same between the two. However, I did find playing on the iPad a bit easier, as I could take in more of a scene at a time without scrolling.

Final Verdict: Fun, simple game with a lot of replay value. It’s a keeper!
