Newer Technology Voyager S3 Drive Docking Solution Now Offers Up to 36% Faster Speed

Newer Technology, Inc. announced today its Voyager S3 drive docking solution now offers upgraded performance for up to 36% faster data transfer rates—achieving nearly 300MB/s real-world sustained data rates—over its USB 3.0 SuperSpeed interface.

Boot and Swap Drives at Will

Voyager S3 turns any 2.5″ or 3.5″ SATA 6Gb/s, 3Gb/s, or 1.5Gb/s hard drive or Solid State Drive up to 4.0TB into a fully bootable and hot-swappable external drive solution. Because there isn’t anything to install or configure, this Plug & Play drive dock saves Mac and PC users the time and inconvenience of installing a drive into a computer or external hard drive enclosure.

New Life for Old Drives

With Voyager S3, swapped-out bare drives are given new life by providing the same ease of use and convenience as flash memory cards, but with much higher storage capacity. Additionally, Voyager’s weighted base and drive eject lever makes inserting, using, and removing drives a safe, effortless procedure.

Newer Technology Voyager S3 Features:

  • Plug and Play with Macs and PCs
  • Supports all 2.5″ and 3.5″ SATA drives up to 4.0TB
  • USB 3.0 SuperSpeed interface, fully backward compatible with USB 2.0
  • Hot-Swap functionality for fast access of multiple drives
  • Push button drive eject for safe removal
  • 2-Color Status LED: blue for power on, flashing red for disk activity
  • Whisper Quiet operation – no cooling fan needed
  • Weighted base and non-skid rubber feet for stable operation
  • Compact design: measures 3.70″ x 5.28″ x 2.68″ (W x D x H), weighs 1.35 lbs. (without drive)

  • I’ll chime in as well that a dock like this with two thunderbolt ports would be tops! Would buy in a heartbeat. Waiting until then.

  • I will buy 2 as soon as they add thunderbolt.
Since USB 3 is not supported by Mac and Firewire seems to phase out, I am waiting for the first vendor selling a HD Dock with both thunderbolt and usb3

  • To add; I used my Voyager Q daily with Carbon Copy Cloner to back up my MacBook Pro via OWC’s eSATA Express Card. Coupled with my new internal SSD (OWC 6G) backup takes about 6 to 8 minutes.

I’m sold on using eSATA, but will gladly swap up to Thunderbolt when it’s an option. Ideally, I’d like to see Thunderbolt/USB3/eSATA connectivity across the line. FW does indeed seem to be phasing out.

  • I’m waiting for Thunderbolt as well. I’m not even that hung up on the affordability as long as it’s a good quality thunderbolt drive dock (Obviously, I’m not going to pay $1000 for it, but…). USB2 isn’t fast enough, and Apple doesn’t support USB3.

  • We just bought two of these and they work well with the OWC eSata card. But you should know that 2.5″ drives get stuck and difficult to eject, until you realize that the reason is the case is too close to the sata mounts.

2.5″ HDDs might have a tiny tab near the end of the controller board, or slightly-raised screwheads for the controller board and trying to eject the drive, these catch on the horizontal edge of the inside casing. We’ve already broken the flap trying to get the drive to eject.

I don’t blame OWC for this as this is likely re-badged chinese product distributed under NewerTech. Aside from that, working quite well. Wish they made this as a dual dock.

    • We’ve tested several of the 2.5″ drives we sell in these enclosures and could not replicate your ejection issues until we tried ejecting a 14.8mm thick drive. Were you by chance using non-standard commercial class drives such as the 1.5TB Seagate FreePlay?
We haven’t had that particular ejection problem brought to our attention before either and we take product design and functionality very seriously here. We strive to have all of our brands, be it OWC or Newer Technology deliver years of problem-free use.

      • Was going to add; I’ve used the Voyager Q with several drives from various manufacturers and have never encountered any problems ejecting the drive.

      • Michael, I’ve been waiting since 2011 for a Thunderbolt Voyager HDD dock.

        When will it happen?

  • If one is made with Thunderbolt (no USB, FireWire, eSata), I’ll buy one, as will many. But it must be affordable.
