OWC Aura Pro works in the new 13-inch rMBP

Thursday, October 25th, 2012 | Author:

Once we had the new 13″ MacBook Pro with Retina display unboxed, it was just a matter of time before we installed an OWC Aura Pro SSD to see how well it worked.

Well, as these pictures show, the Aura Pro fits just fine in the 13″ rMBP’s drive caddy (something new that wasn’t in the 15″ model), and so far everything seems to be running quite solidly.

Obviously, we’ve got a battery of other tests to put the drive through and we’ll have a more definite answer by early next week, but right now, all signs are pointing to “Yes.”

That bay looks like it’s the same form factor as a 2.5″ drive. Can you corroborate or contradict this?

      • OWC Michael says:

With the tray removed, a 2.5″ drive can physically fit in the bay. Unfortunately there are two caveats. First, the cover will not go back on with a standard 9.5mm thick drive – so the 2.5″ drive needs to be the 7mm form factor or less. Second, the drive cable is not the correct design to connect a 2.5″ SSD.

Are you going to be announcing any special deals next week? ;)

    3. OTfiddler says:

A long, long time ago, Mac laptop users set up RAMdisks on their machines, not only to speed boot-up and access times, but also to conserve battery life.
Would a modern SSD offer significant increase in time between charging over a modern platter-based harddrive, and in your opinion, would it justify the extra expense?

      • OWC Larry says:

Short answer is yes and lots of users out there even booting SSD off of FireWire and USB2 – severely limiting top end throughput due to the interface caps, but the responsiveness is still a huge improvement even over one of the latest platter drives. All depends on the use – but yes, there is a benefit for many scenarios for what you describe.

    4. Ernest Stalnaker says:

Will you offer a 240GB option for those people who initially purchase the 128GB model?

      • OWC Grant says:

Hi Ernest and thanks for visiting. We’re definitely looking into other capacity configuration…we may have an official announcement early next week on such. Bookmark the blog and visit often!
