16GB RAM for 2010 Mac mini, MacBook, MacBook Pro Announced

Other World Computing announced today through its MaxRAM program the immediate availability of 8GB and 16GB OWC Memory Upgrade Kits that enable owners of 2010 Mac mini, MacBook 13″, and 2.4GHz MacBook Pro 13″ computers to add up to 16GB of RAM — up to double the previous listed maximum capacity of 8GB. Like all OWC Memory Upgrade Kits, a ‘how-to’ install video and OWC Lifetime warranty are included for each Mac model.

OWC Lab Proves 16GB Capability

By maintaining its own on-site lab with the industry’s most extensive collection of Apple Macintosh computers, second only to Apple itself, OWC is uniquely positioned to perform ongoing testing and development of memory upgrade kits for Macs made over the past 25 years. This capability enabled OWC engineers to test confirm 2010 Mac mini, MacBook 13″, and 2.4GHz MacBook Pro 13″ computers are MaxRAM Certified for the following hardware and software conditions:

  • Mac mini (Mid 2010)/Mac mini Server (Mid 2010) – Model ID: Macmini4,1
  • 13″ MacBook (Mid 2010) – Model ID: MacBoook7,1
  • 13″ MacBook Pro 2.4GHz (Mid 2010) – Model ID: MacBookPro7,1
  • Mac OS X 10.7.5 or later is installed

OWC MaxRAM Memory Upgrades for 2010 Mac mini, MacBook 13“, and 2.4GHz MacBook Pro 13” computers:

Add to one existing factory installed memory module for up to 12GB total memory.

Replaces both existing factory installed modules for 16GB total memory.

Customers can enjoy additional savings by utilizing OWC’s Memory Trade-in Rebate Program and receive cash back for their original Apple factory memory modules.

Mac mini and MacBook owners who are unsure if their machine is among those that can be expanded can consult a helpful guide OWC has created to help Mac owners determine their machine’s Model ID. OWC also offers a complete online memory guide that assists tower, desktop, and notebook Mac owners in quickly determining the available memory options for nearly any Mac model.

Mac mini and MacBook owners of machines that cannot be expanded to 16GB and/or are running up to OS 10.7.4 can still upgrade memory up to 8GB via OWC’s 2 x 4GB kit.

Maximum Memory Recommended for OS X Lion Users
While Apple’s official minimum RAM requirement for OS X Lion is 2GB, industry experts agree 4GB of RAM is the minimum that should be installed for optimum performance of typical daily computer usage. For more advanced uses such as graphics production, A/V editing, and/or running a virtual machine, 8GB and more installed RAM is highly recommended for maximum performance benefit.

We’re quite pleased to offer owners of these specific 2010 machines the ability to double the amount of memory previously thought to be the maximum,” said Larry O’Connor, Founder and CEO, Other World Computing. “Adding more memory is one of the easiest and most cost effective upgrades a computer owner can make. It allows applications to operate more efficiently by unleashing the processing power of any machine.”

  • Hi, I have mid mac book pro 2.4 GHz Intel core i5, memory 4gb1067 MHz DDR3 with Mas OS High sierra Version 10.13.6. Can I able to upgrade to 16gb Ram?

  • I have a macbook pro 13 mid 2010 and want to add more RAM but I can’t upgrade the firmware.
I am trying to update the firmware as instructed but only have the information: “This software is not supported on your system”. Tried after a clean install without success. Have any idea how to solve this? Thank you!

    My settings:
    MacBookPro7,1 – ROM: 66.0.0.0.0 – SMC: 1.62f7

    Apple support:
    MacBookPro7.1 – MBP71.0039.B0E (EFI 2.5) – 1.62f7 (SMC 1.6)

  • hi ,
i bought the MacBook Pro 13″ Unibody Mid 2010 Memory Maxxer RAM Upgrade Kit from owc .
my macbook pro model is the right type (Model Number : A1278 ; MacBook Pro Mid 2010 13 Inches) and i am running the latest OSX .

carefully followed every steps and did test after test with all the owc ram sticks and my old ones , but the MacBook pro can take only ONE piece of your 8G ram and one of my old 4G ram , the max limit i can see is 12G in total .

i can confirm that each piece of the ram modules is ok but if i place both of the 8G ram into the MacBook pro , it just cannot boot . all i can see is the sleeping light on and no chime .
    please advise .

    regards
    david

  • Hello, I read through all the comments, and didn’t see my particular machine mentioned, so I thought I would ask.
    I have a mid 2010 17″ macbook pro 6,1 i5 2.53ghz Processor running El Capitan, 10.11.
I have found speculation in forums that this would run 16GB using DDR3 1066MHz chips. The fly in the ointment being that no one seems to have actually tried it.
Have you folks tried this model with the later OS and 16GB? Thanks

  • I have a MacBook Pro 15″, Mid 2010, 2.4 GHz, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
    Mac OS 10.13.6

Do you think I will notice a significant improvement in performance if I upgraded the RAM?

  • I’ve got the 16gb kit in my mid 2010 macbook pro, and it’d been working as 16gb, showed up in the about this mac info, and i was running sierra. not sure when it happened, but now my macbook only shows 8gb of ram and is treating the second slot as if it is empty. i’ve swapped the sticks, same result. any clue if its a sierra update that wiped this out and if so, which last known version works? or if there’s a way with homebrew or onyx or something to switch it back to recognizing the ram? Thanks, I don’t know where else to ask!

    • Hello samgreen,

There is a chance that one of the RAM chips or RAM slots went bad. We would love to assist you further and will be sending you an email shortly.

  • Well, I know my Macbook Pro mid 2010 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 Ghz actually running OSX 10.9.5 does support 16 GB of RAM but, is it worth to upgrade to 16GB or 8GB (2x4GB) would be enough for me? I’ve 4GB as it came out the box. I mean, price is double but I don’t know if it’s worthy. Any performance tests somewhere to check it out?
Thanks a lot in advance! :)

  • I did upgrade my 2010 Mac Mini successfully with one of those 16 GB RAM I bought last June 2016 while I was visiting the USA. After 2 weeks the Mac Mini went to sleep while I was in the middle of a Dreamweaver task. It has not awakened from that sleep. A reputable computer MAC/PC repair shop here in Manila, Philippines was not able to revive it; so I proceeded and bought a good same exact model Mac Mini from e-bay and had it shipped across the ocean here to Manila. It came with Sierra pre-installed and it would not take the 16GB RAM. I downgraded to a clean install Mountain Lion (which I still prefer to use) and still it will not accept the RAM. I checked the EFI Boot Rom version and I did upgrade the machine to the latest available on Apple’s Support site and it still will not take the 16GB. It is running fine with my old 8GB RAM, but do any of you have any clue as to why this might be … a possible solution would even be better :) Thanks!

    • Thank you so much for your questions Alfred! We are sorry to hear about the troubles that you are having. Please know we will be reaching out to you shortly to speak with you further and work towards a resolution!

      • Thanks so much for responding, Dyllon. I am not troubled as much as I am puzzled, since the RAM worked on my other, but currently a “Rip Van Winkle” mid-2010 Mac Mini. I am hopeful you might find out what may be the root reason for this aberration of the RAM not working on my other exact same model unit.

        • I would be happy to assist you further to see what is going on! Please know an email was sent on March 3rd to your email address. I will send you another email!

I look forward to speaking with you.

          • Thanks again, Dyllon. I had been on the road in remote areas and had no internet access. Though I checked my e-mail and did not see what you sent on 3/3 or 3/8, not even in the SPAM folder. Anyway what I wanted to know is if you know of any instances before when this had happened to a 2.4 Ghz Mid-2010 Mac Mini and if there is a known solution. Basically, when I replace the 8GB with the 16GB, the Mini just attempts to start and a red light inside the earphone input socket lights up then turns off with the Mac Mini making a very faint “POWER OFF” sound.” Any clue what it might be? Living in Asia at the moment makes it hard for us to connect.

            • I am very sorry to hear that you did not receive the previous emails. I have not seen this type of behavior from a 2010 MacMini and would love to further troubleshoot with you.

Please send a contact to our Technical Support Team and ask for me! I look forward to working with you and finding out what is going on here!

  • Hi I have a Mid 2010 13″ MBP 7,1 that is compatible with the 16 gb upgrade but I need to boot into Snow Leopard 10.6.8 sometimes. Will it fail to boot with 16 gb installed or just fail to address the extra 8 gb over the old limit?

  • Hi, I hope on being able to upgrade my MacBook Pro from 4 gb of Ram to 16gb, here are my specs…

I have an aluminum unibody 15inch MacBook Pro 6.2

  • Hi,

I’ve got a MBP 13′ (mid-2010) 2.4 Core 2 Duo (full specs below) that I’m now operating solely under Win7 64Bit. It formerly run as well under OS-X 10.6.8, relatively to which the firmware seems up to date (MBP71.0039.B0B).

Would this system recognize 16 GB RAM if operated under Win7 64 Bit? Or would it require the latest firmware (MBP71.0039.B0>E<) of OS-X 10.7.5 (which was never installed on my MBP) anyway?

    Thanks and al the best,
    Roland

  • hi i have mid 2010 unibody macbook a1342 ıs that good with 16 gbs of ram? sorry for my english

  • Thanks. I have already replaced my harddrive on the system with an SSD. Because I am running Parallels under OSX, it is still a little slow. A memory upgrade seems to be the only solution at this point. Too bad that my specific model cannot handle 16GB.

  • I am having trouble finding information on my particular model of the MacBook Pro 15″ mid-2010 system. I would like to upgrade it from 8GB to 16GB if possible. Please let me know if it is possible. The specs of my machine is provided below.

  • Hi there, I have a white unibody macbook mid 2009.
says it takes 1067 MHz DDR3 memory module.
    It has a 2.26Ghz intel core 2 duo…
    Can I put 2 x 8gb of RAM in?
Can’t seem to get a definitive answer… there is talk of having the latest OS it being able to handle it.
I would take a risk, if it wasn;t a risk to my computers life. Will be purchasing this week, so any info would be most appreciated.
    Cheers.

  • Hello-

My mac book pro is a 2010 model (7,1) and is has a processor speed of 2.66 GHz. I noticed that the article says the processor for the 16GB upgrade was 2.4 GHz. Would the 16GB work for my machine?

  • Hi I have a mid 2010 MacBookPro 7,1 with boot ROM Version MBP71.0039.B0B and OS X 10.10.5. Unit is running really slow. Would upgrading RAM from 4GB to 8 or 16GB and replacing 256MB SATA HDD with SSD improve performance. Also do I have to upgrade the firmware first?

    • Hello Debbie,

Your mid 2010 MacBook Pro (7,1) will not need any firmware or OS upgrades to use the maximum amount of RAM (16GBs). Upgrading your RAM and internal drive to an SSD will definitely improve your performance.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our Technical Support Team!

  • Hi, I have a mid 2010 Macbook pro 7.1 running 2.66 GHz intel core 2 duo and 8gb of ram. i would like 16gb of ram, is it possible? and could you please give me a link to the right product.

  • Hello I have a mid-2010 13-inch MacBook Pro running 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 and os x captain. if my Mac can be upgraded to 16 GB?

  • Mid-2010 13″MBP here, seems eligible for the RAM upgrade. Question is, have many folks had issues a la Tom Stout? What about the 16GB upgrade working with OSX 10.11.1?

  • Sorry if this is a duplicate…I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 13″ (MacBookPro 7,1) with OSX 10.10.5, and I purchased the 16gb Ram kit. With the 16gb installed the computer will not boot up, it starts to boot, I get the sound bit and logo, then the progress bar hangs about 1/3 of the way.
When I put one 8 gb stick in with a 2 gb stick, it works fine and shows 10gb of ram.

Any ideas why the 16gb won’t work?

  • I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 13″ ( Model ID MacbookPro7,1), and am running OSX 10.10.5. I purchased the 16gb of ram and installed it but the computer hangs on boot. I get the chime and the apple logo, then the progress bar starts, but it hands about 1/3 of the way through. It won’t let me boot in safe mode or with any of the test functions. Any suggestions?

  • I wish to upgrade my Macbook 7.1 (2010) to 8GB of RAM, what memory kit do you recommend

  • Hello I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro 13 inches running with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4gb 1067 MHz DDR3. I wonder if my Mac can be upgraded to 16 GB?

  • Hi,
I want to know whether my Macbook Pro Mid 2010 I7 2.8GHZ could upgrade to 16g ram?
    THX

  • I have a compatible mid 2010 macbook pro 13″ that currently has 4GB (2x2GB).

From your above post, it seems as though I would be able to buy an 8GB module and install it along an existing 2GB module and have 10GB. (Until I can purchase a second 8GB module).

If I buy an 8GB module, are there any technical reasons why I might not want to leave one of the 2GB modules installed?

Does it matter which slot the 8GB module gets installed to?

    • In the mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13″, you will be able to add one 8GB module and use one existing 2GB module without any issues. You will want to install the 8GB module first followed by the 2GB module.

  • I have a mac book pro 13, mid 2010, with a 2.4 Ghz intel core 2 duo processor, can i upgrade to 16 gig of ram,
    thanks

    • Hi, Paul. The mid-2010 13″ MacBook Pro is indeed compatible with 16GB of memory. It should be noted that OS X 10.7.5 or later is required for utilization of more than 8GB of total system memory.

      • Hey OWC Jarrod. Does that mean that 8 GB would still work with snow leopard 10.6.8 on a mid 2010 2,4 ghz macbook pro? (i depend on my fcp 6 version, that wouldnt work on a newer os x) thanks

        • Hello srdjan,

Running 10.6.8 on your 2010 MacBook Pro will be compatible with a total of 8GBs (2x 4GB) of RAM.

  • Tengo una Macbook Pro 7,1 a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

Puede operar a 16 Gb de RAM?

    • Hello,

The MacBook Pro 7,1 has a maximum capacity of 16GBs as long as the operating system (OS) is 10.7.5 or later.

  • I have a macbook pro 15″ mid 2010 with a 2.4 ghz i5 chip can i upgrade to 16 gb for ram?

  • Hi, I’ve got a (mid) 2010 2.4GHz 13″ MBP. Would love to upgrade to 16GB of RAM, which I understand should be supported.

The article above has the link “16GB (2 x 8GB) PC3-8500 DDR3 1066MHz Upgrade Kit with Lifetime Warranty” and says $99.00. However, the page linked to shows $159.00.

    Any chance that it’s actually $99? :)

  • Macbook pro 17″ mid 2010 2.66ghz (3.33ghz) 620m currently have 8gb (factory maxed during original order) is this version elegible for ram upgrade to 16gb?

  • Will I be able to upgrade from 4GB RAM to 16GB RAM ?
Here is the model # for my Macbook Pro
    730277LLATM

    • Hello David,

Your computer (MacBook Pro 7,1) is compatible with 16GBs of RAM.

  • Hello, I’ve been researching on this for quite some time now, and I just wanted to ask you guys directly.

I have the macbook pro (6,2) mid-2010 15″ 2.66ghz i7, that I am hoping to upgrade to a 16gb ram, but from what I can gather, it is only the 13″ (from the 6,2 era) that can take the 16 gb upgrade, and 15″ + 17″ are capped at 8gb.

    Is this correct?

    Thank you in advance.
    Justin

    • Hello Justin,

In the mid-2010 15″ 2.66ghz i7 MacBook Pro (6,2) you will only be able to upgrade to 8GBs of RAM.

Only the MacBook and MacBook Pro 13″ (7,1) would be compatible with 16GBs of RAM.

      • Hey Dyllon,

Are there any plans to make a 16GB upgrade for the MacBook Pro (6,2)?

        Thanks

        • At the moment 8GB is the maximum possible due to chipset limitations. Apple originally listed it with a 4GB maximum for memory and we were the first to support it to 8GB fwiw. None the less, it doesn’t seem likely we will ever see 16GB in that model due to the motherboard chipset itself.

          • From everything that I’ve researched MacBook Pro 15 mid 2010 or MacBook Pro 6,2 supports 8gb in mac os. EVERY other os (Windows, Linux, Ect) supports 16gb in this model. Am I Wrong OWC?

  • Is the 16GB upgrade supported on Mid-2010 MBP 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, MacBookPro7,1, OS X 10.10.2 (14C1514)?

      • Thank Dyllon. I just wanted to be sure because I saw some posts that said the 2.66GHz model would not work properly. Could you just validate that the Mid-2010 MBP7,1 2.66GHz will work find with 16GB (2x8GB).

        Thanks

        • Hey Joe,

The Mid-2010 2.66 GHz MacBook Pro (7,1) is compatible with 16GBs of RAM. Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions!

  • is it possible to use 1333 mhz ram? if so do you have the kit?

Will it work if my core 2 duo is 2.66 not 2.4?

    • Hello Saul,

I am sorry but all of the computers in this OWC Blog article would not be compatible with 1333 MHz RAM.

  • Hi, I installed the 2×8, About mac says I still have only 8GB. It shows only one 1x 8GB installed, the other slot is “empty” . It seems sharper though.. can it be 16gb but not show that it is? If I fail to get both working, am I ok to run on one 8GB. and is 1 8GB better than 2×4?

Further info.. It is a Mac mini mid 2010 4.1

    • Hello eemlyn,

If the computer is showing 8GBs, that means that only 8GBs is currently available. If only 1 chip is showing up, there are several troubleshooting steps that need to be taken.

I would recommend to contact us so we can help you troubleshoot your RAM. We are more than happy to help.

The only reason the full 16Gs would not be able to be used is if one of the computers RAM slots is not working. In this case, it would be best to put 1 8GB stick in.

        • Hello, I bought your 16GB ram kit for my mid 2010 Mac Mini server and it only recognizes one 8 GB module in the top slot only. It does recognize a 4 GB module in the bottom slot, but not 8. Please assist!

  • Hey there. I have the mid 2010 13″ MBP 7,1 and I am looking to do a memory upgrade.

Now I know that OWC has tested and rated this computer to 16GB of RAM.. but my concern is if this will cause my machine to run any hotter? Any other ‘side effects’ of running 16GB of RAM? Thanks

    • Hi Mike, our memory is built to perform flawlessly with your Mac. All OWC memory is tested to ensure that it meets or exceeds the specifications for those systems that it’s listed as being compatible with. You won’t see any side effects or more heat generated.

  • Hey, any chance my 2.4GHZ MBP mid 2010 will run 16GB RAM on Yosemite? I’ve seen on a couple of websites that it is possible but I’m not so sure.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

    • That serial number comes up as a MacBook Pro7,l model identifier. I would recommend confirming the model identifier using these instructions from Apple. As long as it is indeed a MacBook Pro7,1 you can use 16GB of memory. • I have Macbook Pro 6.2 Mid 2010
    Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz MBP61.0057.B0F
OS X Yosemite Installed I have upgraded to 16GB 1066MHz 2×8 OWC Ram but I have having issue its keep restarting and Kernel Panic comes does this model only support 8GB?? Please anyone Help?

    • I’m sorry to hear about the trouble with the kernel panics. The 6,2 is rated for 8GB. The 2010 7,1 model MacBook Pro is the only MacBook Pro from 2010 that will take 16GB. We keep compatibility information on each product page under the descriptions and that lists all the compatible computers. • I HAVE A MID 2010 MBP I5 2.53GHZ WHICH I PLAN ON UPGRADING TO YOSEMITE, WILL I BE ABLE TO RUN 16GB RAM? Model #: W80430WRAGV

    THANKS IN ADVANCE

  • I have a MacMiniServer4,1 and would like to use 16GB with Yosemite (run some VMs with Fusion). Has it been tested with this OS?

  • I have Macbook Pro Intel 2.4 GHZ Core 2 Duo 15inch Late 2008 early 2009, Model 5,1 Unibody 2GB 1067MHZ DDR3 RAM. Can I upgrade this with 16GB RAM. Thanks!

  • I have a Macbook Pro (15 inch mid 2010) with 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM. Can I upgrade this mac with 16 GB RAM mentioned above?

    Thanks!

  • I have a Mac Mini Server 2010 (MacMini 4,1) 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo. I want to use 2 DDR3 1600 MHz 8GB RAM Chips I already have from a PC, they fit and everything, but I want to know if 1600 MHz RAM Chips can work with a 1066 MHz RAM Slot.

    • We only recommend using 1066MHz DDR3 RAM for your model computer. Having a higher clocked memory set installed can lead the computer to be unstable.

      • But my question is, can i use it. Because I don’t want to spend another 200 dollars on new ram chips that won’t be compatible with newer machines

        • Physically, yes you can installed it into your Mac Mini. Most 1600MHz RAM should be able to down clock to 1066MHz speed. Being that the memory in question came out of a PC and is not specifically made for Apple computers adds to trouble that Mac Mini is not designed to accept 1600MHz DDR3 modules.

Being a faster specced memory and an unknown brand for PCs, I would strongly recommend not trying to use it. The Mac Mini can become unstable which can cause freezing and crashing, which will eventually lead to corruption of your data on the internal drive and external drives.

  • Ok, thank you very much. I have another question. I charged my mobile to that macbook it toke warning but i didn’t read that. After three or four times it doesn’t work good and I reset SMC but after that also don’t work good trackpad don’t work when it is sleep i start never work good after a restart it work good and its battery work about half time before charging mobile. now if i plug flash mouse become ancontrol and open application without i click it.what should i do?

  • Hello
I have macbook7,1 mid 2010, Can I upgrate its ram to 6 gb one of that 4gb and another one 2gb? It means can i upgrate as anequal ram for any slot? And that ram is 1333 mghz speeds is work like 1033? Thanks.

    • Hello, you can install a 4gb and 2gb module, however they both need to be 1066MHz DDR3 memory. We do not recommend 1333MHz modules in the MacBook7,1. For best performance we would also recommend having matched memory modules and going with 2x4GB modules.

      • Ok, thank you very much. I have another question. I charged my mobile to that macbook it tooe warning but i didn’t read that. After three or four times it doesn’t work correct now and I reset SMC but after that also don’t work good trackpad don’t work when it is sleep i start never work good after a restart it work good and its battery work about half time before charging mobile.

  • I have MBP min 2010 17′ running Yosemite. Is there updated information if Yosemite enables this model to utilize 16 gb OWC ram?

  • So…according to this article, an 8gb stick is $50…but when I go to the site, its $100?

The 16gb (two 8gb sticks) is doubled from the price listed in this article as well?

  • Hi there,

I have a 7,1 Unibody MacBook and I would like to upgrade it to perform better with music producing software (Ableton Live and Logic, mostly).

I am buying an SSD soon and I’ve noticed that it is also possible to upgrade the RAM to 16GB. Although I have read somewhere that 16GB would kill the battery much faster. Is that true? If yes, how much would it affect the battery life? I have 4GB now but I sure need a minimum of 8 for further work.

    Thanks a lot!

    • Hello there,

Replacing your existing memory modules with higher capacity modules will not affect your battery run time.

  • Hey! Ok so I have a mid 2010 15 inch macbook pro.

After researching online everywhere I have been told that it is not possible to upgrade more than 8GB of RAM in my MBP. Yet this article claims otherwise?

Can someone confirm that this is possible? And a short explanation on how this is possible? Sounds too good to be true..

  • I’m waiting for a 16b upgrade for my 15″ 6,2 i7 Macbook Pro as mentioned by others above. I’m just posting to follow this thread in case any firmware upgrades change the max memory spec.

    Thanks

    • Hear, hear.

      I have a 6.2 i5 Mid 2010 Macbook Pro.

From what I hear, Linux or that OTHER operating system will successfully boot with 16GB of RAM on our machines but OSX will Kernel Panic.

Which means we’re one OS update away from doubling our RAM capacity.

Can’t be firmware, because Linux doesn’t have the problem.

  • I apologise in advance if this is slightly off-topic.

I am looking to upgrade a mid-2010 13″ MacBookPro7,1 to 16 Gb RAM and Mavericks. My SMC is version 1.62f7. The ROM/EFI version is reported as MBP71.0039.B0B, not the MBP71.0039.B0E listed on Apple’s “EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs” page.

If I install Mavericks, will updates be made to the EFI/SMC that will allow support of 16 Gb RAM?

Also – I am confused that your website says that mid-2010 13″ MacBookPro7,1 can NOT support 16Gb RAM, whereas other (highly reputable) RAM supplies say they can. (Your website says the mid-2010 13″ MacBook 7,1 can support 16Gb, but that the MacBookPro counterpart can only support 8Gb RAM.)

Key to this is that I’d like to update directly from OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard, last update) to Mavericks if possible but want to make sure the RAM upgrade to 16GB is supported.

    • No worries Grant. Firstly, sorry for the confusion, the MacBook Pro7,1 will take 16GB of memory. This is listed in the memory information for the 2008-2010 MacBook Pros. Here is a link to the 16GB memory kit for the MacBook Pro7,1.

As for the EFI version, Apple generally pushes the latest EFI updates when you upgrade your OS to the latest version. If for some reason it doesn’t update during the upgrade you can find the latest EFI update for your machine here and the latest SMC version here. You can find all the most current EFI and SMC version updates for all Mac computers here on Apple’s website.

  • Hello Sir

I want upgrade my Macbook Pro 15inch Mid 2010, I have only 4GB RAM bt i want now 16GB or above, & i also need upgrade my HD to SSD. Please Suggest me it is possible.

  • Can i upgrade to 16GB?

    Model Name: MacBook
    Model Identifier: MacBook7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number of Processors: 1
    Total Number of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 5 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

  • 1x*GB stick shows a price of $59.99 in this page. When I clicked on the link, it shows $103. So what’s the actual price? Is shipping to India available? Whats the cost?

  • Why does the CHEAPER 13″ model of the mid-2010 MacBookPro support 16GB of RAM.. while the more expensive 15″ Model from the same mid-2010 model line.. ONLY still support 8GB…. very dissapointed since I have the 15″ model.. What is the REASON why the 15″ model doesn’t work with 16GB. what is the chipset diff between the 2 to explain this?

    • The Core2Duo chip is okay with it, but the newer i5 and i7 chips cause a hiccup.

  • Is the 16gb ram tested working with MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) MacBookPro7,1 EFI 2.5 and SMC 1.6?
    Thanks

    • The EFI 2.5 rev was and remains the latest revision for the MacBookPro7,1 model and the 16GB was tested with this, yes. Apple OS version 10.7.5 or later is also required in order for your system to utilize the 16GB of memory.

The SMC revision does not affect memory compatibility.

  • I am pleased to know that OWC is discovering, exploring and testing ways to extend the life of the Mac Book Pro’s. However it is disappointing to learn that the MBP 6.1 17″ Mid 2010 does not qualify for the memory upgrade to 16GB, even though smaller LCD models or even prior models do. Some of this capability seems to be related to firmware updates that are needed when we upgrade the OS.
Is there a way that OWC as a partner with Apple (if that is the case, or even if it is not), to work with them (apple) to encourage Apple to come up with the firmware update that would allow this particular model to be upgraded?. The investment we made on this laptop is significant enough for Apple to consider what the customers would want to be able to do with these laptops..
I hope this becomes possible soon… Apple’s computer are not cheap machines, so we would like to be able to use them for quite a long time..
    Thanks

    • Charlie,
I also have a Mid 2010 MacPro 6,1 17″ and I very much need to upgrade my ram from 8GB to 16GB . Has there been any progress on this problem ? This model desperately needs 16GB to function.

  • Despite the claims my late 2010 Mac Mini Server 4,1 refuses to recognize the 2 8GB sticks. Even after installing MAVERICKS and the most current firmware update. What else can I try?

    • I would check to make sure your Mac Mini has the latest EFI Boot ROM version – http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237.

I recommend trying to clean the memory module. Take a clean pencil eraser and gently rub it along the metal contacts on the memory and follow that by using a microfiber towel along with rubbing alcohol to clean the metal contacts on the memory, this should insure that the memory is getting a solid contact with the computer

If that doesn’t resolve the issue, I would try both and SMC and PRAM reset.

      SMC reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411

      And

      PRAM Reset:
      1) Start the machine while holding down the Option-Apple-P-R keys

      2) Wait until you hear the 3rd startup chime, then let go of the keys and let the machine boot up.

If your issues persist please contact our tech support

  • Since mavericks launched is there any chance the mid 2010 macbook pro 6.2 can take up to 16 gigs of ram??

  • Hello,

I have a 13″ MacBook (Mid 2010) – Model ID: MacBoook7,1 that has recently been updated to OS X Mavericks. The machine still runs on original 4GBs of RAM and once it has used all the swap memory, it freezes and requires a hard reset. Considering an update to 16GBs, but I’m not sure if the upgrade kit I buy from OWC will be compatible with this OS. An attempt to update EFI did not work – it is not compatible with Mavericks. Can not remember whether the latest EFI update was run before installing Mavericks or not – it may have, it may have not.

Have you tested the performance of this MBP with Mavericks running 16GBs of RAM? Would you recommend the upgrade?

    Many thanks.

    • The support of 16GB of memory is dependent on EFI version 2.1 and SMC version 1.5 which would have been installed with 10.7.5 or higher. Mavericks is fully supported with 16GB of memory for this computer if those updates are installed. You can check your firmware on this link here – http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237

  • Specs: MacBook Pro, 15 inch, mid 2009, 2.66ghz intel core duo.
Will the 16GB upgrade support this laptop?

  • My macbook pro is 7.1 mid 2010. Last updated mountain lion but became slow. 2*2 GB memory
I’d like to update to 8. Is it possible to use only one 8. Which option would be better.
Is there any chance to rebate the old ram. Actually, I live in canada
    Thx

    • Yes, you can run on one RAM module alone, but there are advantages to having both slots occupied for dual channel memory addressing. So, if you only want 8GB, I’d suggest a 2x4GB configuration as opposed to a single 8GB module and an empty slot.

Or you could go a full 10GB and install the 8GB module alongside one of your existing 2GB modules. That way you’d have the dual-channel addressing through the first 4GB of memory.

      Regardless of the dual-channel addressing – more memory is always faster – so 10GB (2GB + 8GB) trumps 8GB (2x4GB).

And, yes, we do offer a rebate on memory: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/support/rebates/memory.cfm

  • It’s insane the bump in price. It makes it worth selling my 2010 macbook pro, buying a 2012 used, and upgrading the ram for $120 instead of $160.

  • Can I buy the kit for $99 as in the article or is the increased price the current price? Why the almost double difference in price?
I have MacBook Pro 15 inch, mid 2009 with 2x 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Can you confirm if this 16GB kit will work?

  • So my machine is a 13 in 2010, 7.1 which means it can be upgraded to 16 gigs of RAM, though I take it that I will also need to upgrade my OS from 10.6.8, I.e Mountain Lion?

    • OWC Memory meets or exceeds all manufacturer specifications and is rigorously in-house lab tested to ensure superior quality, compatibility and reliability. Additionally, our memory is backed by industry-leading lifetime advanced replacement warranty. If you need your OWC memory replaced, we will ship to you same day.
Given the fact that we’ve validated, tested and guarantee our memory to work in every machine we list compatibility for, why wouldn’t you want to buy the RAM from us?

  • Hi.

Will this work if you are running OSX 10.8.4 – the latest version of Mountain Lion? Thank you.

  • From the comments above, it seems that the max memory can be changed by a firmware upgrade. Do I see that correctly? If so, what is stopping Apple from releasing firmware for older models that let us increase the memory in our machines as memory modules with higher capacity are becoming available? Do they just want to force us to buy newer models as later software seems to have an ever increasing appetite for RAM?
I don’t see me getting a new MacBook, because they are no longer making 17” models, but I’d love to have 16 GB, so I can run more VMs in parallel (not Parallels).

    • We cannot speculate as to why Apple does what it does with their firmware. If you were to ask Apple about their memory limitations they would state the same limitations that were set when the computer was originally released. Whether they know the firmware they release expands the maximum supported memory or not will remain a mystery.

RAM Limitations are not only set through firmware, but are also set by the OS. For example the MacPro 8 core and 12 core models support 128gb of memory, but Mac OS X only supports 96GB of memory.

  • Hi, would like to know my macbook pro 13-inch, Mid 2009 specs meet the upgrade to 16GB requirement?

Processor: 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Software: OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,5
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz

    Thank you

  • is the 2.66GHz model still stuck with 8 GB….? or can we upgrade to 16 GB…?

bcoz previously the 16 GB RAM compatibility was 2.4 GHz model only… now its showing up the 2.66GHz model..? could u confirm on this..?

    thanks…. (Y)

  • Hi Guys,

I have the exact MacBookPro7,1, 2.4 GHz macbook pro, so it seems my machine fits, but quick question, on this page it says $99 for the 16GB kit, and on the store, it says $149, why the difference?

    Thanks!

  • I have a 2011 MBP 13in with 2.5 ghz .. has this model been approved for the MaxRam upgrade?

    • We have tested the 2011 lineup and qualified it to work with up to 16GB of memory. All memory options for the 2011 MacBook Pros can be viewed here

  • How about the upgraded 2.66GHz version of the 13″ 2010 MBP? Any chance you’ve ran the test with that model?
    Thanks much!

    • We did indeed test and the memory certification did not pass on the 2.66GHz model – thus the speed qualification in the article.

  • Just wanted to see if you can confirm whether this kit would work for the following configuration:

    MacBookPro 17″, Mid 2010
    2.8GHz Intel Core i7
    Mac Identifier: MacBookPro6,1

The default RAM that came when purchased was 4GB, Apple says Maximum supported is 8GB. Can it support the 16GB upgrade you’ve talked about here. Or is there any other 16GB kit that you have which can support the above model?

    Thanks!

  • With the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7 released today, will you be re-testing with the 15″ model???

Looking for if it will work on MacBookPro6,2.

    Thanks!

      • Finished testing on the 15″ MacBook Pro ModelID: MacBookPro6,2 – SMC Firmware Update 1.7 did NOT change any memory compatibility with that model.

The Apple MacBook Pro 15″ – Mid 2010 is OWC certified for up to 8GB of memory.

        • Hello, dudes!
It seems there is a new release for Firmware EPI on the MBP (2.6) Is there a chance to probe under a MacBookPro 6.2, 15″ mid 2010, Intel Core i7, 2.66 GHz. OSX 10.8.3

I also looking the possibility to expand the memory at 16GB

          Thanks in advance!

  • why can’t you do the same for the macbook pro 15″ mid 2010 model. If you can for the 13″ the 15: should be no problem.

Most user of the 15: macbook pro need it more than the 13: users.

    Thanks
    Dave Huff

    • Dave, this isn’t something we “did” it is more something we “discovered”. The results we found were that the 13″ was able to use 16GB of memory after upgrading to 10.7.5 or later – and it was simply not the case with the 15″ model.
