#GivingTuesday Reminds Us of Meaning of Holidays

toys-for-tots’Tis the season of giving. But not just giving gifts to loved ones. As we’re reminded on this #GivingTuesday, it’s also about giving to the less fortunate.

Leaders blaze trails and often inspire others with their actions. The great thing about the holidays is that there is no shortage of people stepping up to help those in need. There are so many tales of giving at this time of year that inspire both the givers and receivers. And the great thing about giving is that there are many things we can do that don’t cost a cent such as volunteering or even donating our household items or clothing that we aren’t using.

Other World Computing is participating in this season of giving as well. Two tall and deep boxes stand outside our human resources office to collect items for the Toys for Tots campaign. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s mission, which they choose to accept: collect new, unwrapped toys from October to December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

OWC will also be showing support to our U.S. military members. Our troops are far from home and away from their families while defending our freedom during the holiday season and throughout the year. While they are deployed, many of these soldiers receive care packages from home, but there are just as many who do not. To show support for our troops, OWC will be running a Military Care Package Drive until Dec. 11 to collect items for the packages and cash to purchase needed goods. OWC founder and CEO Larry O’Connor will also be matching the amount of money donated to this great cause.

This holiday season, we hope that you will do for one what you would like to do for all. There are so many ways we can all make a difference for someone this season. Have a little extra cash while at the coffee shop in the morning? Pay for the next person in line. Many churches have opportunities to adopt a family this time of year. Or you can check with a local Nursing Care facility and see if there are seniors who have needs this year. Stop by and bring them a small gift and a smile. Doing something wonderful doesn’t have to cost a lot. It can, but it certainly doesn’t need to. All you need to do is something small, but do it with great love.
