‘Continuity Activation Tool’ Makes Continuity Features Possible on Incompatible Macs

ContinuityIf you have a Mac that’s not supported for Apple’s new Continuity features in OS X Yosemite but want in on the fun, then you might be in luck.

A clever solution authored by “dokterdok” has been posted to GitHub and makes “necessary changes to enable OS X 10.10 Continuity on compatible hardware.” This app brings features such as Application Handoff, Instant Hotspot and Airdrop to unsupported Macs – some Macs with Bluetooth 4.0 are not supported by Apple for Continuity features.

The author does urge you to “take a look at this complete Continuity guide to understand if your Mac is compatible, or if you need troubleshooting” and cautions that it “can break your system.” However, the author adds that the tool “makes many compatibility checks and a backup before the actual patching is done, in order to reduce risks.” To be safe, we recommend that you backup your data before installing the tool.

Check out the software at GitHub to see whether your unsupported Mac is compatible with the software and whether you’ll need any hardware changes first.

And for more on Yosemite and its Continuity features, check out OWC’s thorough Yosemite Compatibility and Transition Guide.

Note: OWC has no affiliation with the software named in this article and receives no benefit related to this support (other than a benefit we all share in the continued support of these applications). If you appreciate the function or functionality this software offers, we encourage you to support the author.

  • Interesting twist. The new version is supporting the use of a Bluetooth dongle on some computers. My iMac is still not compatible because of the athos wifi card, but other computers can just be upgraded via usb now.

  • Worked perfectly on my 2011 Air last night. I don’t understand why Apple disabled these features when the hardware in my Air supports them.

I’d love to open up my 2011 iMac and upgrade the Airport/Bluetooth card to get these features to work and to add 802.11ac wifi (I’ve already installed an OWC SSD). Any chance OWC will carry the parts for that?

  • Any chance that OWC will be able to source the BLE 4.0 boards for older systems? If I’m going to upgrade, I’d rather buy from OWC than eBay…
The board I would need is:
