A Quest For Healthy Focus

I have been on a quest for a better beverage. My thirst has not been quenched and my palate has not been satiated to my satisfaction and I won’t stand for it any longer.

Okay… enough drama.

I quit caffeine a couple years ago and don’t like sucking down sugar-filled soda-pop or sports drinks named after apparent attempts to aid gators. I definitely prefer carbonated beverages but can’t find any that don’t threaten me with the possibility of cursing my pancreas with diabetes.

So what do I do?

Enter Brain Toniq.

I was chatting with our founder, OWC Larry, last week and he brought up that my lack of sleep was showing on my face. I mentioned that I had been up all night with one of my kids and he offered me a Brain Toniq. I politely refused at first, because the can looked like an energy drink (which usually contain enough caffeine to assassinate a herd of buffalo) but he was persistent enough to make me read the ingredients:

  • Carbonated water
  • Organic Agave Nectar
  • Natural Citrus Extracts
  • Citric Acid
  • Numerous extracts from roots & herbs

I was impressed. It’s so rare to see a can like this contain absolutely nothing that is known to cause cancer in the state of California (Pretty much everything is known to cause cancer in the state of California – check your packaging – it’s insane). On top of that, the sugar content of the can is only 20 grams, as opposed to 48 grams in Coca-Cola, 94 grams in Jolt Energy and a whopping 102 in Rockstar Punched Guava.

Everything looked legit, so I popped the can open and took a swig.

My initial reaction was a little bit of confusion. The taste was different from any beverage I’d had before. It was kind of a new experience, much like the first time you kiss a girl or shave with a new razor after realizing you’ve been using the same dull blade for a year and a half (I get distracted easily and forget the little things).

I went off on my merry way and proceeded to work. When it was time to head out for the day, I realized that, regardless of my lack of sleep from the night prior, I didn’t seem to have any issues focusing on my work during the day. Now keep in mind that I don’t have the type of job that includes repetitive tasks. I’m a software architect that spends his days creating elegant solutions to complex problems through ridiculous amounts of code. For me to be able to focus on my work for an entire day without issue after only a few hours of sleep is fantastic. The beautiful part of it all is I had that focus without having to beat the crap out of my heart with an overdose of caffeine, which meant no jitters or random voices in my head (does anyone else get those?).

The next day I stopped back in Larry’s office and asked if I could have another can. He smiled, knowing exactly what I had experienced, and offered to send a case up to my office.

I have since finished the case and put in an order for another one. It should be delivered to my office by the end of the day (near instant delivery is one of the perks of working at OWC). I’m pretty confident I’ll be ordering a new case every couple of weeks. It’s well worth it.

I’m not going to say it’s going to change your life, fix your problems, or save the universe from an impending alien invasion where our brains will be harvested for space-age Nutella, I’m only saying that my focus is much more consistent and my mouth is happy. Isn’t that enough?

  • I love the stuff! So much that we are now distributing it in the San Francisco Bay Area! Met the owner at MacWorld a couple of years ago, and was hooked on the taste and effects of the potion.
It is now in over 90 outlets in The City, and growing steadily. If you want a case (or more) delivered to your doorstep, order it and fuel your brain!

  • Welcome to the believers:) My office of 20 coders have been Brain Toniq converts since we first sipped BT at the MacWorld expo, 2009. What I like most is the “quiet” focus that the Rhodiola and A-Glyceryl Phosphoryl Choline seem to give me. Not jittery at all. Just that kind of zen mental laser that I can get lost in where 2 hours go by and it feels like 20 minutes. I still drink a coffee in the morning, but I use Brain Toniq for after lunch, when I still have to work hard, but am starting to fade out.
    Great review.

  • “Numerous extracts from roots & herbs” … beware of that part.

Just because something is “natural” it doesn’t mean it is good for you.

After all, most poisons are from nature. ;-)
