OWC Mercury Aura SSDs still raking in the praise.

It’s been about a month from their debut, yet the OWC Mercury Aura SSD family is still collecting accolades like kids collect… well… whatever the current collectible craze is.

This time around, we’ve got a great review from ZDNet on the OWC Mercury Aura Pro Express SSD for the 2010 MacBook Air. They liked that there was finally an option that increased the capacity of the MacBook Air enough that it could be used as a primary machine. I think this quote from the article says it best:

“…it’s the best upgrade that you can get for the MacBook Air.”

You can find the full review on the ZDNet site.

Next up, the folks over at StorageReview.com took a look at the Mercury Aura Pro 1.8” SSD, which is primarily for the netbook and ultraportable market. However, it is also nearly identical to the OWC Mercury Aura Pro MBA (the main difference being the MBA version’s custom connection cable), so owners of a 2008-2009 Air may also find it interesting.

They put the Aura through a battery of tests and benchmarks and came away plenty impressed. They were so impressed, in fact, they gave the Mercury Aura Pro 1.8″ their Editor’s Choice award.

You can see the full battery of tests and read the full analysis at the StorageReview.com site.

While we’ve already mentioned the Mercury Aura Pro Express winning a Macworld Best of Show award this year, video of the presentation is finally up and available. We’ve embedded it below. While you could sit through the whole thing, we highly recommend just starting at about 6:25 in and watching OWC Grant do his thing…

Finally…while the drives have been gathering praise, so too have the the installation videos for Aura Pro Express and Aura Pro MBA. Watching these show just how easy these installs truly are and leaves one with only one question. “How big do you want to go?”

  • While planning to buy a Macbook Air I stumbled over your site seeing that you offer this awesome “Aura Pro Express”.
But there is just one problem: what do we do with the replaced drives?

I did not find any enclosures at all to re-use the replaced drive..

  • Are there any plans to offer a SATA cable for the connector on the MBA 2010 SSD or the Aura Pro Express? I installed a 240GB Aura Pro Express in my 2010 MBA 11″ now I have a 128GB SSD sitting in a box collecting dust. I’d love to be able to repurpose it! I’m sure you’d find a market for a SATA adapter and probably one that adapts it to USB as well.

  • A Mac Updater is currently in development. Given its complexity, we do not want to provide a specific date at this time, but we feel it should be available by the end of Q1.

If you would like your SSD updated earlier, please contact customer support at 1 (800) 275-4576 and we can arrange for yours to be returned and updated to the latest firmware.

  • Have you created a Mac OS X version of the firmware updater for your SSD drives yet? There’s an updater available for Windows but not for the Mac. I haven’t seen any updates since November 1st, 2010. As an early adopter I need to upgrade my firmware to resolve the sleep & hang issues. I am disappointed that MacSales does not have a Mac updater for their firmware.
