Apple Store Down – Light Peak, iPad 2, MacBook Pros?

This morning, the online Apple Store has been taken down temporarily stating “We are busy updating the store for you and will be back shortly.” This action usually indicates a new product being released or updated.

Is Apple updating the Mac Book Pro lineup? Could the iPad 2 be released for sale today? Are we going to see Light Peak on new models? Did Apple make the move to the Sandy Bridge chipset?

We’ll have the details for you here on the OWC Blog as soon as we know. Stay tuned.

UPDATE 8:45am:

While the store is still down, Apple has updated their website to announce the new MacBook Pro!

Looks like the 13″, 15″ and 17″ models all were refreshed. The mini DisplayPort now doubles as a Thunderbolt port (utilizing intel Light Peak technology).

Here’s the new models:
MacBook Pro 13″ Early 2011 2.3GHz i5 and 2.7GHz i7
MacBook Pro 15″ Early 2011 2.0GHz, 2.2GHz and 2.3GHz i7
MacBook Pro 17″ Early 2011 2.2GHz and 2.3GHz i7

As the machines still use the same 1333MHz DDR3 memory with support of up to 8GB, OWC has the memory, hard drives, and solid state drives you need to upgrade these machines available immediately.

UPDATE 9:15am

Apple Store is back up! Here’s a screenshot of the lineup change:

  • Do you think there will likely be a PCI express card I can buy eventually for my 2 year old Mac Pro that supports PCI express R2?

I do video editing and would be interested in faster drives and or video cards to connect to this… i. e. I understand that there is likely to be video acceleration hardware that would also connect this technology…

am I thinking in the right direction or does it not make sense for a Mac Pro card in the future?

Thanks for any insight any one might have

  • You guys rock. I’m definitely looking forward to Elite-AL Pro Thunderbolt enclosures. :)

  • Hello,

When will you have DDR3 1333 memory modules for the new Sandy Bridge MacBook Pros released today? How much more do you expect them to cost compared to the 1066 modules?

    Thanks!

  • Hi – trying to find Thunderbolt/Light Peak accessories. When do you envision items like hard-drive enclosures being added to your catalog?

Q2: In addition to hard drives and photo/video accessories what other accessories would you add to support this new connectivity?

    Thanks
    WL.

    • Hi William and thanks for stopping by with that question. We’ve been kinda busy working on products like the first and only SSD for the MacBook Air 2010 model…so we’ve been a bit distracted ;-)

Seriously though, this (Thunderbolt) technology was one that wasn’t going to be shared or leaked by Apple to anyone.

Now that interface (and even the name!) is official we will direct our full attention to incorporating it into our storage solutions and other accessories that can benefit from having two 10Gb/s channels on the same connector.

I wish I could give you a timeframe for introductions….but we don’t like to play in the “vaporware” niche :-)

However, I can confidently say you’ll find Thunderbolt equipped products on our site during 2011.
