Sometimes, “Recommendations” Are Actually “Requirements”

Friday, October 14th, 2011 | Author: OWC Grant

About a month ago, we talked about how MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.2 “secretly” resolved problems that 2011 MacBook Pros were having with 6.0Gb/s SATA performance.

Since we posted about the fix, we’ve been hearing from customers that some firmware updates are not fully completing… even though it appears that it is. These failed updates offered no indication that the update didn’t complete.

So a bit of sleuthing on our behalf turned up the culprit. When installing the update using Software Update, the installer informs you that it is recommended that you plug in your MacBook Pro to working power source while installing. This makes sense – the one time you don’t want your battery to go out is when running a firmware update.

However, if you download the update via its Apple KnowledgeBase page, though, the description there states that you must have your MacBook Pro connected to the power connector for installation.

From all the reports we’ve seen, it would appear that the KnowledgeBase instructions are the more accurate or at least more specific. Connecting the power supply while updating your firmware isn’t a recommendation; it’s a requirement.

Taking that requirement mindset even further is that when installing any firmware update on any Mac notebook, make sure you have it connected to its wall outlet power adapter before you start the update. Then, after running the updater, check the Hardware Overview screen in System Profiler and see if the the correct new Boot ROM or SMC version number for the update you’re running is present. If you still have the old version, then you will need to run the update again.

Naturally, this connect to power requirement is already solved for desktop machine users. But if you can think of a way to update a desktop machine like an iMac, Mac Pro, or mini without being connected to power, we’d like to hear about it!

The Day After The iPhone 4S Announcement

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 | Author: OWC Grant

After getting a good night’s sleep to truly absorb the 4S, my take is that it’s a brand new model that doesn’t just offer incremental updates.

It does everything the iPhone 4 did plus a variety of things better:

  • A dual core A5 processor versus the iPhone 4 A4 single core processor. The end result being twice the speed and up to 7x the graphics performance.
  • Supports speeds up to 14.4Mb/s while the iPhone 4 supports speeds up to 7.2Mb/s. That’s good news for AT&T Mobility HSPA+ network users.
  • Intelligently switches between antennas for improved call quality…and no more “antennagate” issues
  • Offers far superior camera performance with 8 megapixel resolution versus the previous model’s 5MP spec. The optics in general were improved as well to offer up to 30% sharper images.
  • 1080p verus 720p video resolution and lastly…
  • it runs on both GSM & CDMA networks….thus making it a true take anywhere “World Phone”

For a side by side “tale of the tape”, our friends at Engadget offer a nice chart. As I hope you’ll agree with me then, even if you too have to “sleep with it’, with the improved performance, the iPhone 4S deserves to be recognized for its own merits as a very good new model.

For one last feel good, for those of you planning on buying the 4S, the physical dimensions and control features are exactly the same. So your existing iPhone 4 case will work. But if you need one or want to upgrade, we offer a wide variety of cases and other cool accessories from which to choose.

OWC Turnkey Program for 2011 iMacs Announced.

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011 | Author: OWC Grant

You know that feeling of accomplishment when you’ve overcome a huge obstacle and you can’t wait to tell the entire world about it? Well, we’ve got it; we’ve overcome the whole “fan/drive sensor” problem found when installing a non-factory drive in the 2011 iMacs. That means we can now officially announce the OWC Turnkey Program for the 2011 iMacs.

We’re also going to one-up the 2010 program by including upgrade options for both the 21.5″ and the 27″ 2011 iMac models.

That drive sensor thing was a big hurdle. Apple uses a custom firmware that sends temperature info in a non-standard fashion. Unfortunately, unless the drive has this special firmware, the fans spin at full speed. We wanted a solution that would be a long-term solution that wasn’t dependent on a software patch or hack. Though those sorts of fixes can be temporarily effective, we didn’t want to rely on them for two reasons:

  1. they put overhead on the bus which can reduce performance
  2. a software solution can can fail or be rendered non-functional by a wide variety of actions (software updates, system reinstalls, etc.) which could risk the hard drive and the data contained on it.

So, we went another route and developed a hardware solution that interfaces accurately and properly with what can be viewed as a frustratingly unique temperature data monitoring method by Apple. While our solution adds a little bit to the cost of upgrading the iMac’s hard drives, we feel that cost is more than offset by the advantages it has over software solutions. Article Continues…

Instant Replay: OWC SSDs Scoring Leaders

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011 | Author: OWC Grant

Just wanted to write quick post to reaffirm some sentiments we touched on in an earlier post about OWC SSDs that make them the “scoring” leaders in the industry:

  1. They’re independent benchmark testing site performance leaders with no BSODs reported and have not been subjected to recalls like other brands. In fact, we’ve had customers experience BSOD with other brand SSDs, tried ours, and reported back no more operational issues.
  2. They were the first to be offered with a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee.
  3. They were the first…and still just one of two brands…that offer up to a five year warranty.

There’s a reason for those best in class attributes…we have the utmost confidence in our products and want you to have the same. Additionally, and more to the techie angle, while we may share the same firmware with other brands as provided by SandForce, we certainly design our own hardware and specify individual components as a true manufacturer. Often, it’s the painstaking attention to minute details that can make a major difference in overall reliability and performance.

Whether you prefer home runs, touchdowns, or slam dunks to define a score, there’s no doubt about it…OWC SSDs are the teammate you want for your computer to make it a winner.

Stay Tuned: New MacBook Air MAY Use OWC Aura SSD

Thursday, July 21st, 2011 | Author: OWC Grant

As part of its big day of releases yesterday, Apple refreshed the MacBook Air line. For the most part, it’s what was expected from this update: a faster processor and a Thunderbolt port, the latest OS, and a backlit keyboard.

The DRAM memory is soldered to the main logic board, just like in the previous 2010 model. But what’s proving to be like the Beatles album cover hypothesis that Paul was dead, there are varying theories on if the flash storage (SSD) is soldered onto that main board or is a removable module as what is found on the 2010 model.  As one can imagine, we’ve been getting asked by users and the media alike if our Mercury Aura Pro Express, the only SSD on the market for the 2010 MBA, will work in the new 2011 model.

Here’s some clues for you all that will perhaps shed some light on this until we get our machines in here and open them up.

OWC Radio #57 – There’s a Lion on the Horizon

Apple’s newest operating system, OS X Lion is due out this month and we’re waiting in anticipation of how it will be received by consumers. With the mixed reactions to iCloud and the almost unanimous discontent with Final Cut Pro X, one can’t help but be curious as to whether the OS will bring together the pride or make some feel like the prey. Additional topics include Fair Use & Copyright infringement, Blu-ray playback in OS X, does your 4g wireless measure up, and much more!
