OWC Offers Fix For 2011 17″ MBP SATA Problems.

Friday, April 15th, 2011 | Author: OWC Larry

In preparation for our official OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD introduction next week, our team has been focused of all aspects of performance of it and including (of course) that offered by the Apple MacBook Pro 2011 laptops, Apple’s first computers with a SATA 3.0 (6.0Gb/s) drive port. For over a month, we’ve been following reports from some MacBook Pro 2011 model users – almost exclusively those with 17″ models, where issues with other brand 6Gb/s SSDs have been encountered. The main issue reported was that the drive simply wasn’t being seen/working.

OWC makes it a point to have our lab equipped with all model/processor variations of each new generation system so full compatibility and performance testing can be performed. While we did not encounter any issues of non-function with our new Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSDs, we did see unexpected results when the drive was installed in the 17″ model. Essentially, the performance was not as high or as consistent as the same drive tested in same speed (2.2GHz and 2.3GHz i7) 15″ or even any of the 13″ 2011 model versions.

When we sent Lloyd Chambers of Mac Performance Guide a sneak-preview of our new SATA 3.0 (6Gb/s) drive, he popped it into his test machine and his results in the 17″ mirrored our own. Lloyd’s initial testing showed the same kind of performance and inconsistencies that were able to replicate here. Further, prior to testing our new 6G SSD, he reported that an Intel 510 6G SSD didn’t show up in his 17″ at all. Rob-ART from BareFeats had a similar experience in his MacBook Pro 17″, yet got the expected high performance results in his 13″ 2011 model, which was in line with all of our lab testing here. There’s still time for last minute gifts from OWC.

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 | Author: OWC Larry

Christmas now fast approaches and our team is here Monday through Thursday until after 11PM each night to make sure nothing is left behind. We are also open through 7PM on Christmas Eve (Friday) and available for ‘last minute’ tech support, customer service, or delivery status assistance.

Regardless of where you may have goods coming from (short of store pickup), if it needs to be there by Friday, I’d recommend using an air option. Ground will be pushing the envelope – you should allow a buffer of an extra 1-2 days if using UPS/FedEx Ground. Also, except for Express Mail, I’d recommend not using options delivered by the US Postal Service unless you don’t need it there by Friday.

So, if you need more memory for that new Mac; a nice case for that iPhone, iPad, or Macbook gift—the days are quickly winding down. Discounted air shipment options from OWC, however, will still get it there on time. :)

Memorial Day Observed At OWC

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 | Author: OWC Larry

The American Flag just before lowering at sunrise

OWC was closed Monday, May 31st, in honor of Memorial Day. This solemn day, originally designated in 1868, is now observed as a federal holiday on the last Monday of May. Not just for another three day weekend, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance to commemorate the lives given in service to our fair nation; parades, speeches, and family observances occur nationwide to honor those thousands of fallen men and women. A great source of information on this important day is www.USMemorialDay.org.

OWC proudly flies an American Flag at our headquarters and in compliance with Memorial Day decorum, it was my personal honor to set our flag at half-mast at sunrise and then restore it to full mast at noon on Monday. The entire OWC team takes its responsibility to our members of the Armed Forces very seriously and we support their efforts far beyond honoring those who have lost their lives.

American Flag at half-mast

None of this would be today without the sacrifices of our fallen heroes. Words can hardly convey our thanks for Freedom and Liberty that they have protected with their lives. That we all have our choice of words and expressed opinions speaks to what they have accomplished.

Our sincere thanks and gratitude goes out to all those serving today, as well as those who have served in our Armed Forces across time. We remember and honor those that have fallen in the line of duty. Our hearts go with all of you who have lost loved ones in time of war and strife.

The American Flag restored to full mast at 12:00PM

Apple Event Today – Tablet Unveiling

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 | Author: OWC Larry

One gadget we know is being debuted in just a few short hours is the new Apple Tablet. Apple’s Hype Machine has had interest in this not so new concept brewing to its current peak for months. It’s really incredible the art of Apple’s team in seeding the rumors, stirring the pot, and – for lack of a better term – manipulating the masses to have all eyes turned on Apple for what this Magic Tablet will be.

I’m not trying to be a downer here… I have incredible expectations for what Apple will unveil. It won’t be the techie specs that make it though, it’s going to be all that Apple has coordinated behind it. To be sure, there were a host of slick Windows OS Tablet/Slates shown off at CES. And then products like Amazon’s Kindle have put books on digital for quite some time. What I expect Apple to show off is an elegant piece of hardware with the functional, real-world use software tools that makes their Tablet consumer ready right out of the box. Great tech specs are nice, but more important is what you can do with it. Where others show off specs, tomorrow Apple is going to sell their new Tablet – not unlike the iPhone – on all the great things you can easily and intuitively do with it.

As an iPhone on steroids, out of the box the Apple Tablet should already have the same function and support as an iPhone. But more than that – it’s said to be the right product with the right display technology to take the ‘old media’ experience to digital. Translation: getting magazines, newspapers, and, of course, books in an agreeable and appealing display format. While it’s all been done before, Apple tends to be ground-breaking by providing a solution with a software accessibility that has everyone wanting to use it.

Reportedly, a huge segment Apple is after with the Tablet is education. McGraw-Hill has already spilled the beans that they’re excited about their deal to make their textbooks available via the Apple device. If the usability is up to all the hype that Apple’s brought upon their tablet – just this one segment alone is a game changer. At all levels, from grade school to university, printed books consume considerable financial and physical resources. Worse, when books are updated – prior editions become obsoleted forcing schools and students to buy the latest editions new. The proof is in the pudding, but this could be Apple’s ticket if they deliver a model for education that shows a long term cost benefit whereby the tablet with eBooks replaces those traditional printed texts. And of course, the Tablet is far more than just a glorified Kindle in doing this too.

The possibilities are whatever one can imagine. I expect a lot of what has been imagined will be delivered in the new Apple tablet. It’s not going to be about the raw specs, it’s going to be about all the things people have imagined doing with a tablet and Apple having the software and deals in place that make it real.

A Holiday Gadget Gift Recommendation from OWC Larry

MXRevolution-ApprovedOWC’s “Cyber Week” of great offers with special savings and free shipping are continuing now into a “Cyber Month”!

Today’s highlight is the Logitech MX Revolution USB RF Cordless Laser Mouse – now just $79.00 (versus normal retail of $99.95!)

Featured top row and center on our specials page, what we have left in stock is all that remains for this fantastic mouse. I personally starting using this mouse in October and if my hand could thank me, I’d get a pretty nice gift. This mouse has excellent ergonomics, awesome sensitivity, and unrivaled accuracy. It gives me all the form and function that really makes a difference in my productivity. And it’s fully rechargeable too via the included base so there are no batteries to replace.

After I started using this mouse, we brought in a large supply…right before the manufacturer discontinued them. The new version – IMHO – isn’t as nice and is not rechargeable. As not too many are left – if you’re looking for a comfortable, high performance right-handed mouse, this is a great one that works as good as it looks and available while they last.

Quick reminder too…unlike a lot of on-line stores, OWC specializes in same day ship out. Most orders for in stock items can ship out same day with regular freight options on orders placed even as late as 7:30PM Central Time. Priority Expedited Orders offer even later same day shipping for orders placed as late as 10:30PM! Bottom line…we ship the items you need – FAST! Also – with live representatives available to assist from 8AM to 10PM plus our 24/7 Live Chat Support – there is always someone available to provide the assistance you need.

The “new” Mac minis?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 | Author: OWC Larry

macmini-20091020Typo in ‘new’ Mac mini page or just marketing play on words?

As our team goes full bore on the new iMac and Mac minis that just popped on the Apple site, I’m sitting back a little disappointed with the ‘new’ Mac minis.

Apple is touting with ‘up to twice as much memory’, but it still only supports up to 4GB. That’s the same as the previous Mac mini line up….

Apparently it counts that they are with up to twice as much memory as before they came with 1GB or 2GB standard, 4GB optional. Because Apple now has a configuration which comes with 4GB  standard, that’s twice as much memory Standard as had been before.

The Mac mini would be an incredible powerhouse with 8GB, that’s what twice the memory should have meant. We were excited, at first, thinking Apple taken off the Mac mini’s memory ‘restrictor plate’, but alas – just a marketing play on words.

Mac Memory: A thrill ride you should get on now

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009 | Author: OWC Larry

rollercoaster-RAM

At the moment, most – if not all memory upgrades – are still selling for substantially below the prices the same upgrades went for this time last year. What’s significant is that those prices a year ago were pretty much at lows already with the chipmakers (Micron, Hynix, Samsung, Etc) selling the parts at prices under that which it costs to produce. These companies have posted – individually – billions in losses on these memory chip sales over the past 2 years. Micron alone has lost over $2 billion during that period. When 4GB was selling for $99 last August – those prices were not sustainable. Due to the global economic meltdown at the end of 2008, costs that were already way below what was supportable dove to all new lows as the chipmakers needed to keep cash flow going. In 2009, we’ve seen productions reduced and entire producers (Qimonda/Infineon for example) completely exit production. As a result, prices had been easing up over the course of this year as the supply/demand equation has come into balance.

Today’s prices are still as much as 50% less than where the cost of various modules could easily be heading. Just over the past five days we’ve now seen cost increases of another 5-10% on DDR2 and DDR3 memory that was already up about 20-30% just over the prior 3-4 weeks. After about two years+ of supply imbalance, we are seeing things start to move swiftly back to a cost level that – if nothing else – will ensure memory continues to be available while these producers stop bleeding red ink to turn out the parts.

Currently, we have stock that doesn’t reflect the latest cost increases. More memory makes a tremendous difference for performance and will make an even bigger difference with Apple’s 10.6 Snow Leopard too. I have no crystal ball – with respect to real costs and supply – but it’s far more likely for pricing to continue ticking up a slope than go downhill again. It’s finally come to the point where the remaining chip makers no longer can continue producing parts sold below true cost vs. that long time bit about it being better to keep production lines going. They can’t afford to and the adjustment to supply is starting to show.

So, how do you turn this somewhat scary price ride into a fun, thrilling experience? Add some speed thrills to your Mac by getting in line on our site right now with these deals:

Add up to 8GB of Memory / Ram to Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro models with 4GB kits from $62.99

Add up to 8GB of Memory / Ram to Apple iMac models with 4GB kits from $62.99

Add up to 4GB of Memory / Ram to Apple Mac mini Models with 4GB from $62.99

Add up to 32GB of Memory / Ram to Apple Mac Pro Models with 8GB Kits from $25.62 per GB of upgrade

Your model not listed above? Never fear…we have upgrades for nearly every Mac produced during the last two decades!

More than just the original factory maximums, we also have tested and support configurations that were not or in some cases still not available from Apple. This includes up to 6GB or 8GB on various MacBook, MacBook Pro, and iMac models that were limited to 4GB; 16GB or 32GB on Mac Pro models originally limited to 8GB or 16GB. When you select memory upgrades by your model – our site shows exactly what upgrade options we have tested and support for your specific machine. Outside of Apple, OWC has the most extensively Apple Mac computer equipped testing lab which enables us to truly confirm all aspects of memory operation. This lab includes nearly every Apple Mac model that has been released over the past 15 years. We don’t just produce & sell memory for Mac – we know Mac memory inside and out.

Not all memory is created equal – OWC guarantees all our memory to meet or exceed Apple Specifications with particular attention to Apple specific requirements including (but not limited to) cooling/temperature, temperature sensor chips, SPD firmware, and gives you purchasing confidence by backing it with a Lifetime Advance Replacement Warranty. Heck, we even offer cash back rebates for your old Apple memory modules!

So go ahead, buckle on in and let us help you take your Mac on a thrill ride before the “admission fee” increases.
