Classic Car Show To Rev Up Woodstock, IL June 9th

beep beep!

GlobeMan loves fast machines... whether they be computers or cars!

Earlier this spring there was a rumor revin’ up that there might be a weekly Cruise Night coming to Woodstock soon.

I love the idea because since the local town over, Crystal Lake, stopped theirs a year or so ago, there isn’t a cruise night within an hours drive.

And who wants to drive an hour away to be able to enjoy their own car or mingle with others who have a passion for for the same things?

The best part about this rumor is that it’s partly true…its first night of possibly many more is being hosted by a great coffee, tea, and smoothie place right off of Rte. 14.

Yep, Java Planet Coffee and Internet Cafe is hosting a classic car show Tuesday, June 9, from 6PM to 9PM.

So all those passer-by’s on busy Rte 14 will get some dessert in the form of eye candy before pulling in to – as OWC Grant puts it, “drink then drool”.

I greatly enjoy bringing my toys to the annual car show held on the historic Woodstock square every August, but if this other local show at Java Planet turns into a weekly Cruise Night, that will really provide a more regular way for me and other enthusiasts to enjoy our hobby.

Another benefit is that it won’t be in the historic square, so no one has to be concerned about bothering in-town residents or others that don’t appreciate car shows.

What do you think...would you come to this weekly cruise night or are you more about being square on the square once a year?

Know What’s Inside When Hot-Rodding Your Computer.

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010 | Author: OWC Mary

As head of the RMA department here and a long time employee, I have—over the years—observed that the most common reason for returns of RAM, the occasional drive or even bare enclosures is that customers had not purchased the correct item.

If you are ordering memory upgrades for your computer and are not quite sure what you have, you just  need to ask. Our knowledgeable sales staff can help you pick out the RAM module you need. You can also use the My OWC feature of our Web site to choose compatible memory for your Mac. Of course, you can always pull the existing memory modules out of your computer first and compare its specifications to those posted for each and every memory module upgrade component that OWC sells.

This goes for hard drives as well. Does your computer have a SATA or an IDE/ATA drive inside? Again, when in doubt, double check. You can find out from the computer manufacturer’s Web site, resources like MacTracker, the aforementioned My OWC, or by simply removing the drive and looking at the connections. Article Continues…

Why Run American V8 Muscle? No computer needed

Thursday, March 18th, 2010 | Author: OWC Mary

People often ask me why I run good ‘ol American V8 muscle in my classic 1966 Fastback Mustang. Obvious reasons aside, there is nothing quite like the feeling of getting into a classic car, being enveloped by the original interior, and then both body and senses completely consumed by an intoxicating mix of touch, sound, and smell. No new car will ever EVER be able to replicate this experience…regardless of how much convenience computer controlled systems offer.

I enjoy being able to lift up the hood of her – yes, HER – and with my hands and a simple tool tune the carburetor just right to make her engine purr. Newer cars where you can click a button on your laptop to control a fuel management set up or add a Super Chip to reprogram factory computer settings just don’t do it for me.  Don’t get me wrong, I have a 1998 Ford Expedition with a couple of minor “technical” adjustments. But owning older cars like my Mustang and a Monte Carlo creates a certain passion in the owner. You can listen to what the vehicle is trying to tell you and fix things yourself with basic skills, tools, and knowledge. As such, none of my “girls” have ever let me down yet.

Try doing that with a warning light or odd sound on a newer vehicle…even if you do have access to a diagnostic tool that plugs into your OBD I/II port.

Now, I have nothing against import “tuners”…to each their own. I don’t run with that crowd and haven’t seen a computer controlled management system fail. But with recent news events about computer software possibly being the cause of some major safety issues, I can’t help but say give me something mechanical every time. That might sound odd coming from someone who works for a computer hardware manufacturer…but it keeps me and my girls rollin’ happily down the road…and Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove, WI.
