Voyager Saves The Day With Some Underwater Salvage

Friday, December 11th, 2009 | Author: OWC Eileen

SCUBAglobe“You just don’t know how happy I am right now,” underwater photographer Frazier Nivens recently wrote to us.

After a recent computer failure, he thought some of his images were gone forever, like old sailors gone to the proverbial Davy Jones Locker.

“I lost my trusty old G5, which had two internal hard drives with tons of data. I had them backed up most of the important folders, but not all. With the Voyager I was able to plug in the drives that wouldn’t mount or boot up, and they fired up and I am now happily removing all the files off the drive.”

Nivens reports clear sailing now and cannot fathom why anyone who works with computers would be without one. And with awesome underwater images like these, it’s no wonder Nivens wanted to access them by going on a data recovery voyage.

“Best thing I’ve ever bought … everybody needs one, who works with computers,” he noted. “Very happy here.”

Don’t let your data, photos, music or video get lost at sea — keep a Voyager Q or a Voyager S2 in your home port.

This iPhone Window Mount sucks!

Friday, December 11th, 2009 | Author: OWC Chris S.

suctionMountWe all know that old joke about the day a certain software company in Washington makes a product that doesn’t suck being the day they start manufacturing vacuum cleaners. Well, the reverse is true for Newer Technology, with their iPhone 3G/3GS window mount.

For a single-cupped mount, this thing grips hard! OWC Jamie was using another brand window mount on his desk while the NewerTech model was under development. Subjected to no other stresses other than just sitting on his desk, the “other” mount suddenly toppled over. Apparently, the suction lock lever broke under that minimal pressure. Now imagine if that had happened in your vehicle. Yikes…

The NewerTech mount, on the other hand, provides much better adhesion to the mounting surface. How much better? I won’t go into details, but in a Mythbusters-inspired bit of product testing, we found that it was able to support the weight of one of our technicians. If it could remain in place with that much stress on it, you can bet it’ll remain attached to your vehicle window with just the weight of an iPhone.

While we’re on the subject, it turns out that you don’t have to worry about the other end losing its grip, either. Unlike other mounts that are designed to hold a variety of phones, but none of them well, the NewerTech Window Mount is specifically designed for iPhone 3G/3GS models. Couple its exact fit cradle with the super vacuum adhesion and you can rest assured that your iPhone 3G/3GS will remain securely in place, even in the roughest of environments.
