Lynx spotted on Olympic course: Coincidence or Apple Marketing Machine in action?

Monday, February 15th, 2010 | Author: OWC Michael

Last Wednesday an orange and black spotted lynx had made it onto the Olympic downhill skiing course during the men’s opening training session. No skiers were on the course at the time as the session was already on hold due to fog.

Makes me wonder, could this be the Apple Marketing Machine at work again by dropping clues into our subconscious and preparing us for the next big thing to come?

Mac OS X nicknames have all been in the big cat family so far: Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, and now Snow Leopard as the current operating system.  Could Apple be preparing us for OS X v10.7 “Lynx”?  Was this cat released into public view in a carefully-calculated plot to steal the show at a world-wide venue to get us thinking its time for an Operating System update? Or, did a member of the local wildlife just happen to saunter onto the course where plenty of eyes would see this spectacle, but no Olympians would be in harm’s way?

Happenstance?  I think not. But I have no way of proving it.

The cat was unable to comment on the events of the day.  It is still unknown whether this was due to a non-disclosure agreement with Apple or the beast’s natural inability to speak.

Add a Mac mini to Your Home Theater System

Friday, February 12th, 2010 | Author: OWC Chris S.

The Mac mini has always kind of been the “odd man out” in the Mac lineup. It doesn’t fit the “four-square” lineup (consumer desktop, consumer laptop, Pro desktop, Pro laptop) Apple introduced years ago. It’s infrequently updated, slightly underpowered, and upgrading it is almost as fun as a <insert colorful phrase describing something REALLY unpleasant here>

That’s not to say the mini is a bad machine. Far from it. The mini’s small form factor makes it nice in areas with limited space. My dad has had one for years, and it suits his purposes just fine – he needs it for basic Office use with a little bit of iLife thrown in for good measure. Couple one with a couple of miniStacks, and you have a decent file server. I’ve even heard of various web sites being run off of one.

As more video content is being made available online, the mini has taken on another popular purpose – as a media center for your TV. Its small form factor allows it to sit with your other equipment easily. It’s got plenty of ports for expansion (something many video players lack), and its built in Bluetooth and AirPort means you don’t have a lot of extra cabling to deal with, either.

Of course, we wouldn’t tease you with the idea of something cool you could do with your Mac mini without showing you how to actually do it. That’s why we’ve put together a nice walkthrough for attaching your mini to your home theater and setting up the software so that you can watch your movies on your HDTV.

You can find it at: http://www.macsales.com/mediacenter

If you’d like to see this kind of setup in person, and you’re going to be at the Macworld Expo, be sure to visit our booth, #1354. We have a mini integrated into a basic home theater setup, so you can see just how well it actually works.

OWC Mercury Extreme SSD already gathering accolades.

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 | Author: OWC Chris S.

‘Twas the day before Macworld, and while others were resting,
diglloyd was busy benchmarking and testing.
And what to his wondering eyes did appear…
But some SSD benchmarks no one else comes near.

Yep, that’s just what it sounds like. As OWC’s contingent braves the elements on the flight out to San Francisco for Macworld Expo 2010, Lloyd Chambers (diglloyd) of the Macintosh Performance Guide has posted his review of the new OWC Mercury Extreme solid state drive, and his review was positively glowing with praise for OWC’s latest offering.

Here’s just a sample of some of the great things he had to say: Article Continues…

Apple Store Down….Apple Store Down!

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 | Author: OWC Michael

This morning, the online Apple Store has been taken down temporarily stating “We are busy updating the store for you and will be back shortly.” This action usually indicates a new product being released or updated.

Is Apple updating the MacBook Pro lineup to add Core i5 and i7 processors?  Is the iPad being released earlier than expected?  Perhaps the Mac mini will be getting a power boost?

We’ll have the details for you here on the OWC Blog as soon as we know.  Stay tuned.

UPDATE:

Well the Apple Store is back up and while our hopes were lifted to see a performance increase in the MacBook, MacBook Pro, or Mac mini – it looks as if the only addition to the Apple Store was the release of Aperture 3.

Guess well have to wait a while longer to see if those i5 and i7 processors are going to be used in more than just the iMac line.
