Save cash while Upgrading by Going with OWC.

Friday, April 23rd, 2010 | Author: OWC NewsFeed

These days, we could all stand to save a little money. At the same time though, we want our Macs to run more efficiently. Fortunately, with OWC, you can get the best price for your upgrades, and that’s been a popular topic here on the Blog as of late. Earlier this month, we announced that you can get an ultra-high-performance Mac Pro workstation through MacPerformanceGuide.com, using all OWC components. A few days ago, we talked about how, despite memory price increases, OWC still has the best pricing. In between that were a number of price drops on external storage. Clearly, OWC helps save on those upgrades for your Mac, and we’re glad to show you how.

Now, though, we’re not the only ones saying it. Rodrigo Sepúlveda Schulz, a popular European podcaster, tweeted about how it’s much less expensive to upgrade a brand new Mac through OWC than it is to make the same upgrades through Apple. When we contacted him about his findings, he told us:

“After comparing apple.com vs. OWC (macsales.com) on upgrading a MacPro 8-core with 8x4GB RAM and 4x2TB HDs, I realized I could save $3,310.05 by ordering the same upgrades from OWC.”

That’s no small amount of cash.

Of course, not everybody is pumping up a Mac Pro with 32GB of RAM and 8TB worth of storage. Maybe you just want to drop a new hard drive in your Late-08 MacBook Pro or max out the RAM in your Core Duo Mac mini. We’ve got compatible upgrades for the best prices, no matter what Mac you have.

The savings don’t stop there. To help you save the cost of hiring someone to install the upgrades for you, you can even check out our free installation videos that walk you through your upgrades step-by-step.

While others may charge a premium for their “Mac-Compatible” upgrades, OWC helps you do it for less.

Every Day is Earth Day at OWC

Every Day is Earth Day at OWC

April 22, 2010, marks the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day environmental awareness observation in 1970. But at OWC, we like to think of every day as Earth Day in a very real way.

As OWC staff members arrive at work each day, we begin our “Green” day by driving into the OWC parking lot, over permeable pavers, and a multi-layer substrate that help keep surface pollutants out of the groundwater.

Anyone carpooling or driving an energy efficient car gets preferred parking, close to the building. While making our way to the building entrance, we walk past the high-insulation glass windows and exterior sunshade technology that reduce cooling costs, as well as bio-swale landscaping and native plants and prairie grasses that conserve water. We can’t see the eco-friendly building materials containing a high level of recycled content, but we know they’re in there. And OWC’s underground geo-thermal heat pump system is also not visible to the naked eye, but it’s hard at work 365 days a year greatly reducing both heating and cooling costs for the building.

On the way to our workstations, we walk past a staff shower facility for anyone wishing to ride a bike to work, and “smart room” sensors that track movement and automatically shut off lights in unused areas. All interior materials, from the carpeting on the floor to the paint on the wall, and even the cleaning products used every day were selected for low toxicity and planet-friendly components. There are recycling bins set out throughout the building for paper, glass and plastic, as well as smaller paper recycling bins in every cubicle. In the two years we have been in the new building, OWC has been steadily working toward  a zero waste goal. Through company-wide re-use and recycling efforts, including paper, glass, metal and  plastic, our records show that OWC has reduced what it could have otherwise added to the solid waste stream by approximately 96%.

And visible through the floor to ceiling glass windows is OWC’s own on-site Vestas V39-500kW, 3-blade wind turbine that cleanly generates more than 100% of the amount of power required by OWC’s operations.  The turbine earned OWC recognition as a Green Power Partner in 2009 from the US Environmental Protection Agency.

iPod Touch can hang out with the NewerTech window mount.

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 | Author: OWC Chris S.

In lieu of an iPod/iPhone App review this week, I figured I’d toss out a neat little tip for you with a second- or third-generation iPod Touch.

Those of you (for whatever reason) who have eschewed the “iPhone” route and have gone ahead with an iPod Touch may have been disappointed when you found out that the NewerTech iPhone 3G/3Gs Window/Desk Mount was designed to only fit their portlier iPhone 3G/3GS brethren. I know I was; darn my iPod Touch’s svelte figure!

However, it turns out I was able to get that nifty holder to work with my Touch, after all. Shortly after I got my iPod Touch, I put a Macally Metro cover on it. Well, as it turns out, this case adds just enough bulk to the Touch that it fits wonderfully in the NewerTech window mount! As a bonus, I can leave my iPod protected while using it in the mount – try that with an iPhone!! <evil laugh>

Now it’s possible that this will also work with other cases or covers for the iPod Touch, but I haven’t had a chance to try any others yet. If you’ve had success with another case, I’d love to hear about about it. Go ahead and post your findings below.

Now it’s just a matter of getting the iPod to connect directly to my car’s sound system, rather than through my old NewerTech RoadTrip (the 1/8″ minijack precursor to the TRAFFICJamz)…

Riding the RAM Rollercoaster

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 | Author: OWC Chris S.

Last August, OWC Larry wrote about how memory prices were just coming off of a low price point and would be going up soon. As so often happens when Larry talks about memory prices, he was right on target. If you put off getting your upgrades until now, you’ll be paying more than you would have eight months ago.

The problem is that memory prices are not unlike other commodities, they change as supply and demand does. Right now, RAM manufacturers have higher costs along with a high demand. That means you’re going to see memory price increases across the board, no matter whether you buy from OWC or from one of “the other guys.”

With that in mind, you still want to get the most bang for your buck, and OWC remains at the front of the pack in pricing for your Mac memory upgrades. Add in our cash-back rebates for your old memory, and the lead lengthens considerably, especially since the amount we’re offering in rebate is increasing, too.

To better illustrate how easy it is to get the best price with OWC, let’s take a quick look at a “sample” upgrade.

The 2.8GHz, Mid-2009 15” MacBook Pro came straight from Apple with two 2.0GB SO-DIMMS for a total of 4.0GB. Not a terrible setup, but to get better performance out of it, you would want to bump the memory up to its maximum 8.0GB.

Since there’s only two memory slots in that Mac, the pair of 2.0GB modules would get removed and a pair of 4.0GB modules would be installed in their place. Right now, that’s a cost of $374.99. Out of the gate, OWC is in the lowest price range for these models, but we can take it even lower.

Once the new memory is installed, there’s the matter of the original pair of 2.0GB modules. Sure, you can stick them in a box in your desk, but they’re not doing you much good there. By checking the OWC Rebate Center, we can see that a pair of Apple Original 2GB modules is worth $60 cash back. By filling out the rebate form and sending in the unused memory modules, we bring the cost of the modules down to $314.99. That’s as low a price as you are going to find for the same high-quality modules that OWC sells.

Mac memory prices may fluctuate over time, but you can always count on OWC to have the best prices, no matter the market.

New Mouse Pad from NewerTech shows why it’s sometimes worth it to go the extra mile.

Monday, April 19th, 2010 | Author: OWC Chris S.

With the proliferation of laptops with built-in trackpads and optical mice that can mouse over just about any surface, not many people think about the surface they use their mouse on.

Things aren’t always as they appear.

When metal-surfaced mouse pads started to make their appearance, we got a lot of requests to start carrying them. Based on a number of reviews and brand requests, we chose a popular manufacturer and started working with them.

Unfortunately, the quality left much to be desired. Scratches on the top surface were the norm, and I even saw one with severe bands of discoloration on a supposedly “gray” surface. More disturbing, though, were the rough chunks out of the edges of many of the pads. One of our IT department staffers even managed to cut a finger open on one of them.

“Okay,” we thought, “maybe this was just a bad batch.” So, we contacted the manufacturer.

“No,” was the reply to our inquiry, “those pads are 100% salable, and of our highest quality.”

I’m not an engineer, but I have countless hours of experience working with precision-cut metals; back before I became “OWC Chris S.”, I worked at my family’s suction filter business. I won’t bore you with the details, but one of my jobs was checking in fittings that we used in these filters. If we’d received parts with this level of relative quality, the whole batch would have been rejected and sent back. As I see it, if it isn’t good enough to stick in the oil tank of a backhoe, it isn’t good enough for someone’s desktop.

Watch your movies anywhere with Air Video

Thursday, April 15th, 2010 | Author: OWC Chris S.

On the heels of reviewing a rather disappointing iPhone/iPod/iPad app, we thought it may be a good idea to talk about one that doesn’t cause involuntary weeping at the mere sight of it. To that end, we’re going to take a quick look at Air Video.

Unlike the apps in our weekly reviews, Air Video is a paid application. Sure, there is a free version, but if you’re into using your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad to play videos and the like, the three buck charge is nothing, and it allows you to see all your videos, not just a select few.

Effectively, Air Video allows you to watch any movie that you have on your computer on your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad. Instead of converting and syncing them via iTunes, Air Video streams the video via your network connection. Article Continues…
