It’s not easy being Green, but it sure is worth it!

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 | Author: OWC Laura

Now, I’m going to warn you right now: I’m not going to sell you anything. I just have a lovely story that I think some of you out there will appreciate and I thought I’d share.

A couple of Fridays ago, I packed up for the night, wished the rest of the team a great weekend and headed for my car. It was beautiful out! I grew up in the deep South, so “beautiful” to me is usually nice and hot, but this afternoon we had received some much-needed rain in the form of some great thunderstorms. By the time I left, the storms had stopped and the temperature was just right. You could still smell the rain in the air, which happens to be one of my most favorite smells. So it’s Friday, it’s beautifully warm but not at all humid and it smells like rain—what a great way to start the weekend!

So I climbed into my little red Jetta, opened the sunroof and all my windows as I usually do, and I started out of the parking lot. Just as I turned out of the lot and onto Bridge Lane right there in front of me was a huge rainbow! You know the ones where you can actually pick out every single color because it’s so bright? Yeah, it was one of those.

Now I have to say that Bridge Lane on an average day is a beautiful view. As you ease up the road heading towards Harding Lane on your left is another company and on your right is a not, yet purchased or developed lot with a sign (which makes me giggle whenever I notice it) that says how many acres and that the oak trees are free. That’s very nice of them to not charge extra, as they line the back of the property, all tall and regal as only an oak tree can be. Article Continues…

ATI X1900 XT Video Card Problems (Finally) Addressed By Apple.

Monday, September 27th, 2010 | Author: OWC Chris S.

Long-time power users may recall the problems ATI Radeon X1900 XT video cards would exhibit, usually due to overheating. For the most part, those with AppleCare were able to get the card replaced. Unfortunately for many, the replacement exhibited the same problems: overheating, video artifacts, distortion, et cetera.

This wasn’t just a few isolated issues, either. Mac performance sites, such as Accelerate Your Mac have several articles and discussions on dealing with these problems. Even our very own OWC Larry was plagued by this problem on his Mac Pro at home, even after OWC Jamie installed a newer, more efficient cooling fan/heat sink on the card pictured above.

It may have taken a while *cough*cough*severalYEARS*cough*cough* but Apple has finally come around and released Knowledge Base Article TS3420.

The article starts with Apple’s description of the problem:

Apple has determined that certain ATI X1900 XT cards sold for use in Mac Pro and Mac Pro (8x) computers between approximately August 2006 and January 2008 may experience distorted video. Affected graphics cards have “V6Z” in the last 4 digits of the card’s serial number.

After that, it goes on to explain how to determine your card’s serial number and how to go about getting a replacement. You will need to bring your computer’s serial number and the graphics card itself into an Apple Authorized Service Provider or an Apple Retail Store location for verification and to exchange the affected graphics card for a new one. See the KB article itself for full details.

It has not been made quite clear yet what cards Apple will be using as a replacement. The Tech Article would seem to imply that the replacement will be another X1900 XT, probably from a different batch. However, there have been reports of nVidia 8800GT cards being used as the replacement card.

For more information and tips regarding the Radeon X1900 XT Mac video cards—as well as all sorts of upgrades for your Mac—we highly recommend checking out Accelerate Your Mac. They’re chock-full of great information on how to get the most out of your Mac!

Price drops on miniStack v3

Friday, September 24th, 2010 | Author: OWC NewsFeed

Whoa! It’s been quite a while since we’ve seen a price drop on the NewerTech miniStack V3. It’s a pity, too, because this highly-rated little drive is probably one of the best storage buys out there, especially if you’re in a situation where you need maximum storage with a minimal footprint.

The miniStack’s design allows it to stack seamlessly with any of the pre-2010 Mac minis, as well as the AirPort Base Station, letting you increase the amount of storage available without increasing the space required.

Of course, it’s stackability isn’t the only great feature of the miniStack:

  • “Quad” Interface – Whether you wan to connect via eSATA, FireWire 800, FireWire 400 or USB 2.0, the miniStack v3 can oblige, offering connection speeds of up to 150MB/s via eSATA.
  • Fully Bootable – Whether you clone your system over to it as a backup like I do or you use it as your main drive like my dad does, the miniStack v3 is fully bootable, so you can work off of it just like you would work off of the internal, without missing a beat.
  • High-Performance Oxford924 based bridge – This is the highly-regarded, A/V certified bridge chipset found in the highest quality storage devices. Speed, stability, and compatibility are all hallmarks of this chipset.
  • Versatile for all your storage needs – The miniStack v3 is great for general data storage, backups (it’s Time Machine Ready), video capture, Music storage, Photo work, and more.
  • Built in powered FireWire and USB hubs – This is a big one. You never seem to have enough FireWire or USB ports, and they’re almost always inconveniently located around the back of your machine. The miniStack v3’s built in powered hubs not only provide you with extra FireWire and USB ports, but if you happen to have a newer Mac that lacks a FireWire 400 port, the miniStack v3’s hub includes a FW400 port, allowing you to connect your FireWire 400 peripherals without the need for an adapter cable.
  • All the cables are included – Nothing honks me off more than getting a new peripheral, only to have to go back out to the store and pick up the appropriate cable for it. The miniStack v3 comes with all the cables that you may need – USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and even eSATA! Its ready to go right out of the box.
  • Software included – Even though the miniStack v3 doesn’t require any special software to use, you also get copies of Intech Hard Disk Speed Tools (Mac), ProSoft Data Backup (Mac), NovaBackup (Windows), and Carbon Copy Cloner (Mac) to help enhance your drive’s functionality.
  • 3 Year NewerTech Warranty – As reliable as the miniStack v3 is, sometimes the unthinkable happens. Fortunately, NewerTech stands behind their products, with an industry-leading 3-year warranty for their storage solutions.

That’s a whole lot of features packed into such a small package!

I mentioned before that we’ve had some nice price drops on the miniStack v3. Here’s a list of the current soutions available and their new prices: Article Continues…
