Want Three SSDs Or An eSATA Port In Your 2010 iMac?

Friday, October 15th, 2010 | Author: OWC Chris S.

OWC’s Mid 2010 27″ iMac Turnkey Upgrade Program has been incredibly popular since we announced it back in August. After all, once you’ve upgraded your hard drive to an award-winning OWC Mercury Extreme SSD and have added an eSATA port for fast access to your external drives, you’ve got the most hot-rodded iMac out there, right?

Well… almost…

You see, we just made our upgrade program even better. Before, in order to get a third internal drive, you had to sacrifice your internal optical drive. Now, you don’t have to.

Now, you can keep your optical drive while still running three OWC SSDs for high capacity and insanely fast file access and transfer. Just how big and fast is that? How does a whopping 1.44TB of SSD storage accessible at nearly 800 MB/s sound?

Yeah, we thought so.

So, how did we manage to get an extra SATA connection inside the iMac? Unfortunately, it involves disabling the built-in, but infrequently used SD memory card reader. Don’t worry, though; we still have you covered. If you choose the option to replace the SD reader with another ultra-fast OWC SSD, we will include our 68-in-One Media Card Reader at no extra cost.

Now, not only will you have another fast OWC SSD installed, you’ll be able to access the memory cards of all kinds of devices, not just the ones that use SD cards, via a USB 2.0 port at the same speed as the built-in reader.

In other words, now you can have your cake and eat it too!

Double the Elite-AL Price Drops

Friday, October 15th, 2010 | Author: OWC NewsFeed

Wow… this is getting embarrassing. Two weeks ago, we had a nice “Two-fer” price drop on the OWC Mercury On-The-Go Pro. Then, last week, we saw a second pair of drops on the Mercury Elite-AL Pro RAID solutions (along with an extra drop for the NewerTech Guardian MAXimus). With all these reductions recently, there’s no way that we could have another pair of drops for you…

Apparently, though, there is a way, because we’ve got price drops on both the Firewire/USB and “Quad” Interface versions of the OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro storage solution.

Like all of our storage solutions, the Mercury Elite-AL Pro series offers incredible performance along with great versatility. Key features include:

  • Oxford 924 based performance bridge solution
  • Two 1394B 9 pin FW800 ports, One 1394A 6 pin FW400 port, One USB 2.0 port, One eSATA port (“Quad” Interface Model Only)
  • Two 1394A Pin 6 Pin FW400 Ports, One USB 2.0 Port (FW/USB version only)
  • Large data buffer up to 32MB
  • Fully bootable, ideal for applications, A/V, Photos, Music, etc.
  • Certified for Audio/Video and Time Machine
  • Attractive & compact shock resistant Aluminum design
  • Connection cables for all interfaces included.
  • Prosoft DataBackup III (OS X), NovaStor NovaBackup (Windows), Carbon Copy Cloner (OS X), and Intech Speed Tools (8.6-10.6.x) included
  • Fully Mac & PC compatible
  • Industry leading comprehensive 3 year solution warranty

That’s a lot of value packed into a single storage solution. But we’re going to make them an even better value with these new prices. Article Continues…

Apple heading “Back to the Mac” on Oct. 20

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010 | Author: OWC Chris S.

Between the iPad, the iPhone 4 and iOS 4, this has certainly been the year for Apple’s mobile offerings. Though we had the requisite upgrades to the MacBook, iMac, and Mac Pro lines, along with a pretty significant revamp of the Mac mini, the Macintosh platform has taken a back seat this year to its touch-based cousin.

This event, though, is supposedly going to change that; apparently, Apple wants to talk about “what’s new for the Mac.” While the possibility of new hardware exists, the lion photo seems to suggest we’ll be getting a peek at OSX 10.7, which—keeping in with the tradition of naming OS X versions after big cats—could very well be code-named “Lion.”

Other than that, details are kind of scarce. What else does Apple have up its sleeve? We’ll have to find out on the 20th.

OWC Leads Customer to Career Path

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010 | Author: OWC Eileen

We love hearing back from OWC customers, not only for the insights that help us to continue providing the very best products, but also for the times when we hear about the positive effect our products have had on the lives of our customers.

Once in a while, we get an e-mail that really makes our day. This was the case when we recently heard from Mike Ball, a Certified Systems Technician and longtime OWC fan, who told us of the impact OWC had on his career path.

Mike’s job title is an alphabet soup of tech know-how: MCDST (Microsoft Desktop Support Technician), MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional), A+ Certification, Net+ Certification, Dell Certified Systems Expert, and HP Certified Systems Tech.

And he credits OWC with starting him out on that path. “If it wasn’t for OWC,” Mike wrote, “I wouldn’t have:

  • learned about how Macs work, and computers in general
  • learned about upgrading
  • learned troubleshooting
  • learned about PCs and Windows
  • started my IT career.”

That progression, Mike told us, started after a visit to the OWC site for help with an early Mac problem, where he discovered that he could perform the work himself, leading to the notion that he could do this for a living, and to the career path that took him to where he is today.

“I’ve been an OWC customer for almost ten years,” Mike wrote, “and I recommend OWC to someone almost every day, with no reservations, at any opportunity, (even) with my PC users. I’m always pleasantly surprised at how fast an OWC purchase can be fulfilled, compared to other vendors. You guys ARE the benchmark for service in my book.”

Mike is a confirmed OWC fan, past, present and future. “OWC was one of my first online buying experiences, back when I had just started getting online and upgrading my first Power Mac, a 7600,” he wrote.  “It was as good an experience then as it is now. My site is now establishing support for iPads and iPhones, and OWC will be my first and only choice to refer customers to!”

OWC looks forward to traveling down the road with you for a long time to come, Mike.

Get a “New” Mac for $200!

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010 | Author: Guest Blogger

Matt S., – A satisfied customer from Tampa, FL.

It wasn’t that long ago that I purchased my MacBook. It was October of 2007, shortly after my G3 iBook adamantly declared it would do no more complicated tasks. Accomplishing anything on that iBook had become a chore, and the faulty soldering job on the GPU didn’t help either. I had to bite the bullet and get a new Mac. It was time. Apple had recently transitioned from the PowerPC CPUs to Intel, Mac OS X 10.5 had just come out, and my poor little iBook just wasn’t able to cope with what Apple had coming down the way. I bid a fond farewell to my first-ever Apple purchase and stored it away somewhere.

Now, here is a very obvious statement about Macs: they’re expensive. You can either believe or disbelieve the hype about the Apple Tax, price-gouging, paying for a brand label, but any Apple product is a significant purchase in terms of cost and value. As a married man with a wife in college and one reasonably modest income, I had to aim low. I went for the bottom of the barrel MacBook. Was that a bad thing? Article Continues…
