App Store Subscriptions: Apple Right. Publishers Wrong.

Monday, February 21st, 2011 | Author: OWC Mike H.

Much has been said in about Apple’s new App Store Subscription policy which essentially says that apps can no longer link to external web sites to buy content or subscriptions. All subscriptions/content must be able to be purchased in the app, with developers and publishers required to offer in app prices that are the same or better than deals available outside the app… like on content providers’ web sites, for example.

Content publishers are crying foul, and most everyone seems to agree. Terms like “big brother” and “1984” are being bandied about with fervent anger.

But the issue is: they’re all wrong and Apple is actually right on this one.

Apple is in the business of making money, and is looking to make the App store and app experience a cohesive experience.

Of course, since the newspapers and magazines have long wanted to provide subscriptions—and they can swing the news a bit—they’re crowing about how unfair this is in their respective media outlets.

Let’s not pretend that magazines and newspapers aren’t trying to cash in both ways on the App Store. They want to get into the marketplace and have Apple handle: app hosting, app delivery, showcase to millions of eyeballs, and most likely new customers, and not pay a dime for it aside from the $100 a year developer price.

Apple is targeting a unified experience wherein users don’t have to login into a different web site for every different app, with different login credentials for each service to subscribe or purchase content. That’s a big fragmented market mess that even I don’t want to be part of.

Apple is also saying if—and that’s a big “if”—the customer subscribes via the app, Apple gets their cut. They’re not saying users can only subscribe via the app, but that the app must also have a subscription or in app purchase method from the content provider that doesn’t gouge the App Store users; it has to be at the standard price. Friday, February 18th, 2011 | Author: OWC NewsFeed

It’s the perfect way to keep your cherished digital snapshots and love songs (along with less-endearing things like spreadsheets, reports and emails from your boss) safe and sound.

Solar Flare To Turn Out Lights On East Coast?

Thursday, February 17th, 2011 | Author: OWC Grant

If you’re a loyal OWC blog reader, you know about our affinity for space related topics. We’ve told you about new life forms, about bombing the moon, even when the first Star Trek episode was unveiled.

So we thought we’d pass this one along…especially for our East Coast readers, as it seems like you have the greatest potential to be affected.

Seems as though an X-class solar flare, the biggest and most potentially destructive type of flare, erupted from the Sun this past Monday.

While we’ve been quietly “peppered” by charged particles since then, the biggest flare of its type since 2006 is projected to hit our atmosphere today.

Now while radio communications disruptions in China have been reported, and there is a chance power grids and satellite communication around the globe can be affected, experts are saying about the only effect we’ll see in the US is some great sky colors over New England and parts of New York State.

From other reports, it sounds like we’re in for more of this for the next few years as we reach a peak in the sun’s current weather cycle.

But the experts at NASA are saying this is going to result in nothing more than some “aurora activity.”

So…here’s hoping the lights stay on for you all…and if they do go out….you at least get a cool light show to watch.

Let us and other readers know if you experience any effects….and no, you can’t use this to blame the bad driving of the person in front of you.

Not All SSDs Are Created Equal (Buyer Beware)

Thursday, February 17th, 2011 | Author: OWC Ron

It’s been about a year or so since we introduced the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro and Pro RE Solid State drives and, what a year it’s been! We’ve seen them win award after award, extensive praise from media review sites all over the map and a reputation on tech forums that is second to none.

I’ve been deeply involved with development of our SSD product line since day one and decided that my MacBook Pro would be one of many machines around the office receiving a Mercury Extreme Pro RE 200GB drive for long-term testing. My MacBook Pro is without a doubt the single most important tool I have at my disposal here at OWC, so I knew the Mercury Extreme would get a solid workout.

Since I haven’t had much opportunity to chime in here on the OWC Blog, I felt this one-year anniversary would be a great time to share a quick look at performance of my drive from new to now. Article Continues…
