NewerTech NuGuard Shell for iPad gets Thumbs Up

Friday, December 10th, 2010 | Author: OWC Chris S.

With all the iPad peripherals out there, sometimes it’s hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. We here at OWC firmly believe the Newer Technology line of cases, shells, stands and other equipment are amongst the upper echelon of iPad peripherals.

Recently, John Martellaro of The Mac Observer did an in-depth review of the NuGuard Shell for iPad, and he had nothing but great things to say about it. You can read the full review on the Mac Observer Web site, but here’s just a couple of his musings on the NuGuard:

  • This kind of case is really better around the office or home because when you’re sitting with the iPad in your lap, the cover flap of folio-type cases gets in the way.
  • “…it not only feels good but provides for a non-slip surface.”
  • “It has just the right rigidity to be strong and keep its shape, yet it’s flexible enough to attach to the iPad without effort.”
  • “…around the house or office, this is a terrific, minimalist case.”
  • It’s great and very modestly priced.

Thanks for the love, John!

The Quest for the Perfect Laptop Case

Thursday, August 12th, 2010 | Author: OWC Benjamin

As a user of a 17” MacBook Pro, I have searched far and wide for the perfect attaché case. I am quite demanding on what my cases look like and how they function. From the pockets and pouches to the straps and the carry handle, the overall fit, finish and function are all extremely important. I have used a wide variety of styles, and have been seeking the perfect mix of style, function and price. I’ve searched the wilds of eBay, the “one size fits all” PC sites, and have even trudged to some place called a “store” with my wife. The world seems stuck on the idea that everyone has a 15” laptop, which meant my results were limited. Sure, I found my “perfect” bag, but it was $400.00…so I continued my quest.

Messenger bags like the Jack Spade Tech Field Bag are nice—stylish and rugged. They have a timeless style about them that can go from college campus to the boardroom. The Matias Laptop Armor case takes me into battle; I feel like 007 as I travel with this case. This classic briefcase can take a beating and your Apple laptop will always come out of sleep shining. With a variety of pockets for files and a few accessories, it’s a great choice.

However, I have come to find I like handles as opposed to shoulder straps for carrying ease and lots of pockets for all my tech tools and accessories. While I dig the timeless style of messenger bags, the flip design gets in my way of accessing pockets. I love leather, and you can’t beat the look of a well-worn leather attaché, but the durability of ballistic nylon is hard to pass up.

After all that criteria and searching though, it turns out the perfect bag is at OWC!  So my journey comes to an end with the Kensington Contour Pro 17” Notebook Carrying Case.

The fit is perfect—more pockets than I know what to do with and plenty of room for my iPhone and/or iPod, extra cables, power adapters, and even a spot for a portable hard drive. The handle is well designed and feels great. There is plenty of storage for files and the case suspends your laptop from harm’s way. A pocket for your passport or travel tickets is well placed and a side pocket will hold a water bottle, an umbrella or even a caffé latte under general carrying conditions.

Best of all? At under $100, the price is a steal for something with this much craftsmanship and functionality.

When a free lunch isn’t good to eat.

Monday, August 2nd, 2010 | Author: OWC NewsFeed

While the excitement over the 2010 iMacs is certainly something to feast on, sometimes we need to cleanse our palettes with news from other areas of the Apple ecosystem.

You remember that iPhone 4 antenna hullabaloo a few weeks back? Well, it seems that a certain big box electronics retailer is offering a free “invisible” antenna cover for its customers to resolve this attenuation problem. At first glance, this seems incredibly nice of them, but as OWC Patrick discovered, it’s not as great as it would seem.

Apparently, in order to get this antenna cover to attach, the technician wound up spraying the back and front of OWC Patrick’s iPhone 4 with water! Though necessary to attach the cover, depending on the amount of water used, this could affect the little water detection stickers that cell companies use to determine whether or not your phone has been submerged, thus voiding your warranty.

So while it’s a free fix now, there is the potential for problems down the line, if you ever need warranty work done.

On top of that, the claim of this actually fixing the antenna problem is somewhat dubious. In-house tests indicate that this solution does not seem to resolve the issue. How come? The reason becomes obvious once you take a look at the covers themselves in the gallery below. You will see that there’s a gap along the edges that still allow your hand to make contact across the antennas, causing the drop in signal.

For those of you who don’t feel like spritzing your new iPhone for little to no benefit, you may want to check out the NewerTech NuGuard Silicone Cases for iPhone 4. These cases simply slide over your iPhone, and not only resolve the “grip of death” issue by completely covering the antennas, but they’ll also help protect your iPhone 4 from getting splashed with water, rather than require it.
