Get a “New” Mac for $200!

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010 | Author: Guest Blogger

Matt S., – A satisfied customer from Tampa, FL.

It wasn’t that long ago that I purchased my MacBook. It was October of 2007, shortly after my G3 iBook adamantly declared it would do no more complicated tasks. Accomplishing anything on that iBook had become a chore, and the faulty soldering job on the GPU didn’t help either. I had to bite the bullet and get a new Mac. It was time. Apple had recently transitioned from the PowerPC CPUs to Intel, Mac OS X 10.5 had just come out, and my poor little iBook just wasn’t able to cope with what Apple had coming down the way. I bid a fond farewell to my first-ever Apple purchase and stored it away somewhere.

Now, here is a very obvious statement about Macs: they’re expensive. You can either believe or disbelieve the hype about the Apple Tax, price-gouging, paying for a brand label, but any Apple product is a significant purchase in terms of cost and value. As a married man with a wife in college and one reasonably modest income, I had to aim low. I went for the bottom of the barrel MacBook. Was that a bad thing? Article Continues…

On-The-Go gets even better with more sizes & lower prices.

Friday, July 16th, 2010 | Author: OWC NewsFeed

We’re well into the Summer season now (at least here in the Northern Hemisphere) which is a popular time for vacations. Whether you’re visiting relatives, traveling to see amazing sights, or just staying at home, there’s a good chance you’re going to take a lot of photos and maybe even some video, both of which will eventually be stored on your computer.

Unfortunately, if you put all those files on your main hard drive, it’ll fill up quickly and having too full a drive can affect performance. That’s just no fun!

Our OWC Mercury On-The-Go Pro FireWire+USB2 Combo portable solutions provide convenient, flexible storage at a competitive price. Built for performance, reliability, and durability, Mercury On-The-Go models have been recognized with top reviews and include ‘Very Good’, ‘Gear of the Year’, and ‘Editor’s Choice’ award bestowments.

Preventing Static Damage to your Hard Drive

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010 | Author: OWC Angela

One of the more frequent question topics we get here at OWC revolve around anti-static precautions.Very often, it will read something like this:

“I purchased a Newer Technology Voyager, and I love it! But I am still unsure how I should be handling a bare hard drive. Should I have one of those Electrostatic Discharge wristbands? Can I hurt my drive by handling it?”

That’s an important question; if you’re going to be handling bare hard drives, you should do so properly. Simply put, electrostatic discharge (ESD) occurs when a charge on a hand or tool finds a path of lesser resistance for itself to “ground.” If this “path of lesser resistance” goes through the hard drive, damage to the drive can occur. So, you must either create an even lower-resistance path, or discharge built-up electrostatic charge prior to handling the drive.

Creating a lower-resistance path to ground is usually done with an ESD wristband. If you don’t have a wristband, you can discharge static in one of two ways:

  1. Touch a grounded metal object to remove any charge from your body.
  2. You can ground yourself with most computer models by touching the metal chassis inside the case. That is, provided the machine is turned off, plugged into a properly grounded outlet, and has a metal chassis. If the machine isn’t grounded, you’re actually causing the damaging discharge we’re trying to avoid on purpose.

There are two other things to keep in mind regarding handling bare hard drives.

  1. Always handle the drive on the side, never touch the printed circuit board
  2. All drives ship in an anti-static bag. You can both handle your drive with the anti-static bag and store your drive in it too.

When you take your drive out, store it in our NewerTech StoraDrive stackable anti-static cases.  They’re a great way to archive your hard drives, protect them from the elements—including static buildup—and keep them safe!

Of course, anti-static precautions should be taken any time you work on your computer or handle any bare internal computer components, like memory or PCIe cards. For more tips check out this article by OWC Michael.

Space (inside your MacBook)… the Final Frontier.

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 | Author: OWC NewsFeed

While Captain Kirk may have been talking about exploring outer space in the future during Star Trek’s famous (though grammatically dubious) opening narration, there’s another space we can conquer today: inner space. No, we’re not talking about the 1987 comedy starring Martin Short and Dennis Quaid; we’re talking about that space inside your MacBook or MacBook Pro.

All Apple laptops that have the “unibody” construction (be it aluminum or plastic) feature a SATA optical drive, rather than the PATA drives previous models had. This makes it simple to replace a rarely-used optical drive with a second SATA drive, be it a standard 2.5” hard drive or a solid state drive. All you need is a bracket to hold the drive in place.

That bracket is now here.

Other World Computing is happy to introduce Data Doubler, an optical bay mounting solution for MacBook or MacBook Pro notebook computers that enables users to install a second 2.5” drive (either standard or SSD) in your optical drive bay.

Gifts for Grads – The OWC Way

Thursday, June 17th, 2010 | Author: OWC Chris S.

There are two major gift-giving occasions in June: Fathers’ Day and graduation from various levels of education. This has led to the “Dads and Grads” phrasing heard in just about every marketing platform out there. As cliché as it is, though, there’s probably someone out there looking for gift suggestions for one or both of these groups. Since we covered gifts for “Dads” earlier in the month, let’s look at “Grads” this time around.

High School Grads

For many high school graduates, college is right around the corner. What better way to get your grad started on the right track to their higher education than by making sure their most important educational tool—their computer—is in top form? Here’s a short list of great gift ideas to make undergraduate life a little more bearable.

  • An External Hard Drive - Picture this: it’s the night before your Organic Chemistry paper is due—a paper that’s worth 51% of your grade. You put the final touches on it and have now brought your laptop to the computer lab in order to print. Except, rather than the normal screen and power-up sounds, all you get is “whirr…click…whirrrrrr…click”. That’s a dead hard drive, and it’s not very likely that you’re getting your paper back from it. Good thing you have an OWC External Storage Solution. As long as you’ve backed up (and with an important paper like this, you better have!) your file is safe and sound.
  • More memory - Let’s face it, college students are invariably broke, so buying the latest and greatest computer every year is probably not within budget. Dollar-for-dollar, upgrading the memory still remains the best way to get more performance out of the computer they already have. For a fraction of the price of a new computer, a memory upgrade a simple memory upgrade can breathe new life into their current machine.
  • Software - having a computer is great, but without software, it doesn’t do a whole heck of a lot. Microsoft Office seems to be pretty much the de facto software package in use for document transfer, but you may also want to consider Apple’s iWork suite for more Mac-like document creation. Utility software, such as Drive Genius can help when your computer starts acting funny at inopportune times, and if your student is going to be working in an environment where Windows is mandatory, you may want to look into compatibility software, so they can run their Windows applications alongside their Mac ones or just use their Mac-formatted drives on a PC.
  • Accessories - Of course, all studying and no fun makes for a pretty dull college experience. Odds are, your student either has, or will have, an iPod, an iPhone, or an iPad. Fortunately, there are a myriad of accessories to protect or enhance their iDevice, helping them get the most enjoyment out of it as possible.

College Grads

While pretty much all of the gifts suggested above will also work for the college graduate (especially those doing post-graduate work), you may also want to consider a gift certificate for some decent food. Between all those student loans and the fact that they’ve likely just spent the last 4+ years living on little more than ramen noodles and canned beans; they could probably use a good meal.
