It’s been a while since we really drew attention to new additions to our Instructional Series of videos, but considering the requests we’ve been getting lately, we figured you may be interested.

Hard Drive Upgrades with Lion: Not Just a simple Clone Anymore

Hard drive upgrades are a popular upgrade for many Mac users and there’s a few different reasons for that.
The first biggie is space. With all the files, pictures, movies, music, software updates, and other bits of info vying for space, that once-vast 500GB hard drive is now nearly full. A bigger hard drive means more room to put it all.
The second one is speed. Even on its flagship 17″ MacBook Pro, Apple is still stuffing a 5400rpm drive inside, which can limit how fast you can access your data. Simply by upgrading the internal hard drive to a faster 7200rpm drive or (better still) a solid-state drive like our OWC Mercury EXTREME series, you can nearly triple the performance of the 2011 MacBook Pros, and earlier models show similar gains – we did a whole series of videos about it not too long ago. But I’m getting off-track here.
Replacing a hard drive in most modern Macs is pretty simple, and our highly-acclaimed Instructional Series of videos breaks the process down so pretty much anybody can do it. Now drop up to 2.0TB of Storage Into Your MacBook or MacBook Pro!

Even with all the exciting news around the OWC offices—price drops, the final space shuttle launch, and other such fun news items—we just couldn’t keep this under our hat.
Other World Computing is happy to announce that with the arrival of the 1.0TB Samsung Spinpoint M8 2.5” Hard Drive, we’ve got our first 9.5mm one terabyte notebook drives now in stock!
Until now, the only 1.0TB notebook hard drives available were 12.5mm high. That meant that only MacBooks and MacBook Pros with the “Unibody” design and 17” pre-Unibody models could have a 1.0TB drive installed, and it would have to be installed in the main drive bay. 13” an 15” MacBook Pro users would just have to settle for 750GB drives.
With the release of these thinner drives, a full terabyte of storage is now available to all MacBooks and MacBook Pros going back to 2006 when they were first introduced!

App Review: Mac App Store
Apple’s Mac App Store went live today. Introduced in October as part of the upcoming OS X 10.7 Lion, it was also announced to be offered as part of 10.6 Snow Leopard. Effectively, the Mac App Store allows you to buy and install applications on your Mac much in the same way that you do for your iOS device(s).
In order to use it, you will need to make sure you’ve updated your computer to OS X 10.6.6. Select “Software Update…” from the Apple menu to both upgrade OS X and install the App Store. You will be prompted to restart.
Once your computer has restarted, Select “App Store…” from the Apple Menu. However, don’t buy anything yet; restart your computer first—there have been reports of a glitch in connecting to Apple that can be remedied by doing this.
Once your computer restarts, relaunch the App Store and log in using your Apple ID (or get one if you don’t have one). Now you can find a piece of software you’d like to purchase and install. Simply click the price and the App Store will deduct the price from your iTunes account (or ask for a credit card if there are insufficient funds), then download and install the software on your Mac.

Installation videos for the 2010 minis!

Look out, radio stars, because with the number of our highly-acclaimed Instructional Series of videos we’ve been putting up lately, things may be a little hazardous for you.
This time around, we’ve got a few videos that a lot of people have been asking for. We show you how to upgrade the memory in both the 2010 Mac mini and the 2010 Mac mini Server. mini Server owners also get a one-two bonus in that we also show you how to replace both hard drives in that model.
Don’t worry if you have the plain, single-drive Mac mini that you want to drop a faster or bigger drive in; we’ve got that video slated to come out early next week.
