Classic RPG Goodness With Tales Of Phantasia? Nope.

Saturday, March 22nd, 2014 | Author:

mzl.msovtctbI’m a sucker for pixel art. But, I think I’ve discussed that a few times on the OWC Blog already. And I think it’s also pretty apparent that I love me a good RPG. Great, got that established and out of the way.

Growing up I had a Sega Genesis and later in life I picked up a Super Nintendo (SNES). But sadly, today’s title eluded me until later in life. I had instantly fell in love with its unique combat system and fairly good story. But I have got to say, Namco/Bandai’s title was absolutely destroyed in this iOS port. Get ready to dual-wield shields in order to defend yourself from this onslaught of fail with Tales of Phantasia.

I think at about four or five points during this play through I nearly gave up. This wonderful tale of a young swordsman was dragged through the muck, stepped on, run out, and then beaten with a baseball bat. The amount of awful that slapped me around through the screen of my iPad blew my mind. Article Continues…

Just Getting To Know ‘You Don’t Know Jack!’

Saturday, March 8th, 2014 | Author:

YOU-DON’T-KNOW-JACKLarge“You Don’t Know Jack!” Actually that’s a lie, more likely than not, you know quite a bit. But all that becomes rather relative in Jellyvision’s/Jackbox Games’ multiplayer trivia game.

YDKJ for the iPad is the next game in a very long line of games that have been living on the consoles of my generation for a long time. To see a free version of YDKJ for the iPad is amazing. So get ready to be slapped around with some sarcasm, because well… You Don’t Know Jack!

What can I say? I love tongue-in-cheek humor and sarcasm. And Cookie, the game’s host, is never shy about dishing out shovels of it at you. Every answer in the game, right or wrong, has a snarky response that will have you laughing. Article Continues…

Military Tactics Meets Cute ‘N’ Cuddly In RAD Soldiers

Saturday, February 15th, 2014 | Author:

mzl.nkiviokcGuns. Grenades. Knives. What’s the mental picture you’re painting right now? If you’re me, it’s probably something akin to Weird Al Yankovic dressed up as Rambo. Certainly not what you’d expect from what I’m playing in this week’s review.

The game is a tactical “shooter” that has you controlling military units in turn-based missions. The concept appealed to me, so I thought I would give it a go. Brace yourself for RAD Soldiers.

OK, so before we get into the meat of what this game is. I have to tell a personal story. Last night, our Internet wasn’t working at home (100 percent my fault, playing with custom firmware is fun!) and because of such playing, this game was about as easy as winning the Indy 500 while running barefoot. Everything in the game needed Internet access. Want to shop? Go online? Want to get a skin for your soldier? Go online. Oh, look a mystery prize dropped on the map what’s inside? AN ERROR TELLING ME TO GO ONLINE. Introducing the iFrisbee! Article Continues…

Simulation Vs. Arcade Racing Shootout!

Saturday, February 8th, 2014 | Author:

Ashphalt_8_Airborne_Large_IconIt’s been a while folks, so I thought I’d toss it up and bring you two reviews in one in the form of a shoot-out. Hang on to your hats. Here we go!

There’s nothing like the feel of a stick shift in your hand and slamming through gears and hearing the roar of your engine as your car slowly inches past the racer with the “1st” icon above your head. That smile that creeps across my face as I take that gold cup… The cheering of the not-even-rendered-on-screen crowd… I love racing games as much as anyone, but here are two distinct categories that generally fall into Arcade or Simulation.

I’ve recently thrown myself onto the tracks of two great racing games: Asphalt 8 and Real Racing 3. Which one takes the lead? Well strap in, check the pressure on your NOS tank, and let’s hit it. Article Continues…

World War Z: One Rule … Survive

Sunday, January 12th, 2014 | Author:

WWZiconI take a deep breath and shove the large stack of boxes forward and peer around the corner silently. I take a moment to make sure my clip is topped off, and that I have my crowbar ready before making the run.

I slide silently past the cardboard tower, taking care not to tip it over and cause alarm, and start softly tiptoeing down the never-been-this-loud-to-walk-on pavement. It’s a wonder that the echoing sounds of a tin can rattling down the alley for one reason or another have the exact same acoustical tones as the echoing sounds of demise.

Pick up your pistols, crowbars, and duct tape some magazines to your arms survivors… It’s World War Z. Please also note this game is not over the top gory, but you’re beating back the undead with baseball bats and ejecting more brass than a 1920s swing band so it is intended for a mature audience only.
