OWC Closed to Observe Memorial Day

American Flag, Memorial Day

The American Flag just before sunrise today in Woodstock

OWC is closed today in honor and recognition of Memorial Day. In service to these United States of America, thousands have given their lives protecting and preserving that Freedom and Liberty for which she stands. Today we honor and commemorate our fallen with parades, speeches, and family observances.

This solemn day of remembrance was originally designated in 1868 to be recognized each year on the 30th of May. In 1971 Congress passed legislation to change the recognized day to instead fall on the last Monday of each May, effectively making it part of a three-day weekend. With respect to what this day is about, I do believe and without regard to a weekend or last Monday of a month, that this 1971 legislation should be undone. A great source of information on this important day and its history is the website www.USMemorialDay.org. Article Continues…

Upgrade Your Mac’s Optical Drive Options

Friday, April 26th, 2013 | Author:

Macs are constantly evolving. They’re becoming faster, more powerful and as found in the MacBook Pro with Retina display and new iMac, they’re becoming significantly thinner.

While saving space and looking great, this evolution also has drawbacks. With ultra-thin designs, something must fall by the wayside. And in new iMacs, rMBPs, MacBook Airs and Mac minis, one important part is left out — an optical drive.

New, thinner Macs aren’t the only machines that suffer from a lack of an optical drive. In older Macs, the drive can simply wear out over time. Naturally, Other World Computing makes it easy to replace a failed drive or add one as an external! Article Continues…

Make An Effort For Earth Day

Monday, April 22nd, 2013 | Author:

Odds are your kids will come home from school today with a globe made out of either macaroni, paper mache, or just a pile of glitter (which will show up for weeks in your bedding, on your TV remote, and in your cereal bowl). This means that either your child’s teacher has an affinity for sphere-shaped crafts OR it could be Earth Day (which it is…don’t let your five year old show you up with national holiday knowledge!). But Earth Day is about so much more than crafts—it’s about recognizing the importance of protecting our environment.

Earth Day was started in 1970—the year of bellbottoms, the breakup of The Beatles (still upsetting), lava lamps, and long hair. OWC was started in 1988, and the world was slightly different—there was more spandex, larger hair, bolder colors, and things were “radical”. And although hair (and lots of it) seems to be a theme for both the birth year of Earth Day and of OWC, we have more than just that in common. Article Continues…

Certain 2010 MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini models join the ’16GB’ MaxRAM club

Friday, December 21st, 2012 | Author:

Do you have a 2010 Mac mini, 13” MacBook or 13” MacBook Pro? Can you benefit from more than 8GB of memory? If you answered yes to both, you will be pleased to know that extensive qualification in our test lab has concluded. These Macs are now OWC MaxRAM Certified for up to 16GB with this OWC 16GB Memory Kit available now and specifically qualified just for these Mac models.

While these systems were originally factory limited to 8GB, the right Apple OS version, current EFI update(s), and correct spec/build memory modules now enable them to support and have the full benefit from up to 16GB of installed memory.  This isn’t the first time something like this happened, however, after the fact enabling such a benefit. A while back, we had a similar instance with the Late 2008 MacBook Pros, wherein having the proper OS version and a particular firmware update allowed you to max your RAM out at 8GB vs. a prior 4GB to 6GB max.

Just like with those Late 2008 MBP models, your Mac needs to meet specific criteria for this to work. In the case of the 2010 Macs, here’s what you must have: Article Continues…

Beatweek Award Refreshes OWC’s Memory

Thursday, December 13th, 2012 | Author:

It’s pretty widely known that upgrading your Mac’s RAM is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to speed up your machine. In fact, we recently outlined in our Blog just how simple the equation is: More Memory = A Faster Mac. And when it comes to upgrading your Mac’s RAM, no one is better suited to meet your needs than Other World Computing.

Already well-decorated, OWC memory was recently recognized in Beatweek Magazine as the “Best RAM Upgrade for 2013″. Beatweek applauds OWC’s reputation for quality memory and recommends it over “off-brand companies who might be sending you RAM chips that are bad by the time you get them or go bad shortly after you install them.”

As Beatweek points out, having sufficient RAM helps programs run faster and makes moving between apps much quicker. However, having too little RAM can cause your computer to start using empty hard drive space  as a form of virtual RAM — and this causes your machine to slow down. And your machine is more susceptible to these slowdowns as operating systems and software programs advance.

So don’t wait until these slowdowns begin to cost you valuable time, take a page out of Beatweek Magazine and upgrade your Mac’s memory today.
