CES 2012 Rewound, Recapped, and Reviewed

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 | Author: OWC Grant

Our second year at CES was a big success and while you may have read other sources’ accounts of the show, I thought you might (since you likely are a regular reader and interested in all things OWC) like a summary from our perspective.

Now, if you’ve never been to a show of this magnitude before, I’ll let you in on a little secret. It’s not the party some lead you to think it is! We’re up early and reviewing info on all our new product introductions. Then we’re on the floor for eight hours straight (we don’t take lunch break – we’ve got an adoring public to serve!). Then, after dinner, it’s back to our “regular” work until we get the necessary three hours of sleep. ;-)

So, while some perhaps party every night until dawn, you can rest assured that Team OWC doesn’t lose its focus.

CES itself experienced a record year… the 2012 show was the largest in the event’s 44 year history with a record number of more than 3,100 exhibitors across the largest show floor the convention has ever had — 1.861 million net square feet of exhibit space. It’s a good thing that the show floor was bigger, as CES drew record attendance with 153,000 seekers of gadgets and gizmos. Article Continues…

OWC Gives a Sneak Peek at new PCIe SSD Card

Thursday, January 12th, 2012 | Author: OWC NewsFeed

While we are not in the habit of announcing products before they’re ready to launch, we decided to let the lid off of this one a little early, as it is quite exciting. We’d like to introduce you to our new PCIe-based SSD.

This card has a “stackable” design, allowing you configure the drive in sizes between 60GB and 2.oTB. This is done using individual miniPCIe daughter cards that attach to the main card. There’s no requirement for all the daughter card slots to be filled at once, which means you can easily expand capacity over time as you need it.

The main card is based around the Marvell 88SE9445 SATA RAID Controller and the individual daughter cards will feature a SandForce 2200 Series controller. It’s compatible with both Mac and PC, and as such, will be the first Mac supported PCIe SSD solution of its kind.

We’ve got more details and performance numbers in the works; stay tuned to the OWC Blog for more information on pricing, performance, and a projected release date in the very near future.

NewerTech Announces NuStand mini XL Acrylic Riser for Mac mini

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011 | Author: OWC NewsFeed

Newer Technology, Inc. announced today the NuStand mini XL riser. The solid, single-piece acrylic riser safely elevates a display over a Mac mini or levels the height of a smaller, secondary monitor connected to a 27″ iMac.

Save Space While Elevating Display Over mini

The NuStand mini XL’s 3.5″ clearance raises a LCD (up to 30″) or CRT (up to 22″) over a Mac mini to an ergonomically proper viewing height. Its open-design offers easy access to all ports and if applicable, the mini’s optical drive slot.

Great For iMac Too

Although the NuStand mini XL is designed for the Mac mini, it offers a display solution for 27″ iMac owners wanting to use a smaller, secondary monitor.  In addition to leveling the height between displays, the NuStand mini XL also provides the ideal location for an Apple Wireless Keyboard, an external hard drive solution, and  other low-profile devices.

NuStand mini XL Features

  • Enables placement of Mac mini with Airport Extreme or Time Capsule, Apple’s Wireless Keyboard and other low-profile devices below a monitor or all-in-one computer like the iMac.
  • Raises display to an ergonomic viewing height
  • Saves valuable desktop space
  • Solid, single-piece acrylic construction

2011 Mac mini works with OWC 6G SSDs

Friday, July 22nd, 2011 | Author: OWC Chris S.

After extensive testing, we’re glad to announce that both the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G line and our Mercury Electra 6G line of SSDs are fully compatible with the 6Gb/s SATA 3.0 ports on both the 2011 Mac mini and the 2011 Mac mini Server.

Both drive models work great, without the dropouts and other inconsistencies that we have seen in the 17” 2011 MacBook Pros.

Like its predecessor, the 2011 Mac mini Server has two drive bays, which can see the drives individually or in a software RAID 0 or 1. We tested a pair of Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSDs set up in a RAID 0 inside the mini Server and achieved read/write speeds over 1000MB/s!

The “regular” Mac mini only comes with a single drive installed. It appears, though, that a dual drive setup is certainly doable (though we can’t really comment on it until we look into it more, so please don’t even ask - just keep checking back; we’ll post it when we know for sure).

However, since the “regular” Mac mini comes as a single-drive unit, that’s how we tested it. It didn’t disappoint, either, getting speeds of over 500MB/s Read and over 420MB/s Write using one of the EXTREME Pro 6G’s.

You can see the results of both series tests below.

As you can see by these scores putting a 6Gb/s-capable SSD (or SSDs) in your 2011 Mac mini or Mac mini Server, really helps it achieve fullest the data transfer speeds possible.

OWC & NT Storage Solutions Lion Ready.

Monday, July 18th, 2011 | Author: OWC NewsFeed

You know that feeling when you’ve upgraded to a new operating system and you find that your favorite peripheral doesn’t work any more? We sure do; it stinks.

That’s why we’ve gathered all OWC and NewerTech storage solutions, including ‘legacy’ products from way back in our past and have tested them for compatibility with OS X 10.7 Lion.

You know what? They all work.

So if or when you switch to the new OS, you can be sure that whether you attach your OWC or NewerTech storage solution to your Mac via USB, FireWire, or eSATA, it’ll work just as well in 10.7 as it did in the versions before it.

Now if we only had the same sort of assurance for software…
