Data Backup 3 Updated to Version 3.1.1

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 | Author: OWC Chris S.

data-backup3In case you didn’t know this, all OWC and Newer Technology storage solutions come bundled with a copy of Prosoft Engineering’s Data Backup 3 software.

Data Backup 3 is a powerful utility that allows you to backup, restore and synchronize your data with minimal effort. Whether you are a new computer user or a seasoned professional, Data Backup 3 offers you just the right amount of power, flexibility and ease-of-use to help you protect your files fast.

Prosoft has released an update to the program, which—among other things—improves Snow Leopard compatibility.

As with many utilities, updating to the latest revision is recommended for maximum compatibility and performance on your system.

You can find more information and download the latest version from Prosoft’s Web site.

Attention Mac Freeware & Shareware Authors (and anybody else who likes independent software)

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009 | Author: OWC Chris S.
  • Globe-SharewareAre you an small/independent software developer with a high-quality piece of software that may be interesting to the average Mac user?
  • Is this software free or inexpensive (<$50)?
  • Would you like to expose that piece of software to potentially hundreds of thousands of users who might not normally get to see it, at no cost to you?

If you answered “yes” to all the above questions, we’ve got an offer for you.

When we talk about our OWC and Newer Technology Storage solutions, we usually talk about the high-quality drive mechanisms we use, the bundled utility software, the fact we include all the cables, and the overall value of the units. These are all great selling points, but there’s one other little “extra” that often goes unmentioned.

On every storage solution we send out, there’s over 2GB of Mac freeware, shareware, software updates, Apple Commercials, and other goodies. We do this for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, it serves as a test to ensure that the Storage Solution is transferring data properly – being able to transfer a larger than 2GB file is a pretty efficient test for the drive. Secondly, it allows Mac users who have a slow or no Internet access to update their system software with the major updates. Finally, it offers a number of useful free or inexpensive tools and utilities that some users may not hear about or try otherwise.

It’s this last option that you may be interested in.

Right now, we’re updating our Shareware Collection for the new year, and we’re actively searching out new and interesting pieces of software to add to the mix.

If you’re a freeware/shareware author and you want to add your project to the collection, let us know. Simply reply to this message with the URL of the software’s description page and an email address where we can reach you (don’t worry, we won’t make those comments live, so you won’t get spammed). We’ll take a look at your software, and if we like it (as long as it’s functional and inexpensive/free, you’re 90% of the way there), we’ll contact you to let you know you’ve made the cut.

Everybody wins with this one: you get free distribution of your software to potential customers, the end user gets to see a new piece of software they may not have seen before, and we get the satisfaction of supporting independent software developers and, by extension, the Mac community as a whole.

How’s that for a gift-wrapped exposure opportunity?

Our products may be “boring,” but the ways you can use them aren’t.

Monday, July 27th, 2009 | Author: OWC Chris S.

In the phrase “May you live in interesting times” – often referred to (inaccurately) as “the Chinese curse”- “interest” is used as a euphemism for “trouble” or “unpleasantness.” If that is the case, then “dull,” “uneventful” and even “boring” could be used as “trouble-free” or “easy” in much the same manner.

Blog reader and OWC customer Larry Rymal did just that when he spoke of adding an OWC Storage Solution to his current system:

“Other than the added storage space, it was a very ‘boring’ uneventful upgrade.”

This is a great statement on the ease of use our products offer. No complex instructions, special drivers or extra equipment is needed to use one of our Storage Solutions. Everything you need to use it comes in the box, and its generally just a matter of minutes between opening the package and having your Storage Solution up and running.

In other words, it’s about as “dull” as you can get.

The irony of this phrasing, though, is that the actual usage of our drives is actually pretty interesting – and not in the euphemistic sense. I never mentioned what system Mr. Rymal hooked his OWC Storage Solution up to. No, it wasn’t a Mac. It wasn’t Windows or Linux box, either (though our Solutions would work with any of them).

He hooked it up to his DirecTV HD-DVR. Now, instead of the already-respectable 500GB worth of storage, he’s got 1.5TB, giving him about 300 hours worth of program recording.

The neat thing is, this isn’t the only instance of our Storage Solutions being used in non-traditional ways. Our products are designed to be as easy-to-use and widely-compatible as possible, which means they can be used with a lot of different setups. For example, I use an older Elite to store movies for playback via my DVD player, which has a built-in USB port. A few months ago, OWC Duane put up a great how-to showing how to use our Storage Solutions with your next-generation gaming platform.

If you’re using one of our Storage Solutions with something other than a basic desktop or laptop computer, I’d love to hear about it. Just leave a comment below.

It’s what’s inside that counts.

Friday, April 17th, 2009 | Author: OWC Chris S.

When I tell people I really like OWC’s external drive solutions, most people  assume I’m just saying that because I happen to work here. I suppose that’s a valid argument; the more drives we sell, the more money the company makes, and by extension the more likely I will be able to keep a roof over my head.

That’s not the only reason I say that, though. Its not even the main reason. Taking off my “OWC Hat,” I still legitimately like the products. When compared to most external hard drives of comparable price & capacity, the OWC and Newer Technology offerings seem to come out ahead each time, and it always comes down to what’s inside the box.

The first thing I notice is the fact that OWC drive solutions are just that – solutions. I know that if I purchase one of those, I’m not going to have to purchase some other part or accessory to use it. All the cables that can be used with a particular enclosure are included – USB, FireWire 800/400 or even eSATA. Backup software is included, in case I want to do that.

Even neater, on the drives themselves is over 2GB of shareware, freeware, and other goodies. Since I don’t have a broadband internet connection at home (or, indeed, one at all) its useful for finding utilities I never knew about or getting a hold of a copy of my favorite Apple commercial. A file that large also helps me rest easy about the drive; I figure that if a drive can take over 2GB of data in one go without choking, that drive is going to be able to take the considerably smaller files I’ll be throwing at it at any given time.

The biggest thing for me, though, is even further “inside.” Because they list it right there on the site, I know that if I were to open up my OWC drive solution, I would find a name-brand hard drive in there. That makes a big difference to me. I once purchased an external device with a no-name, generic drive inside, and the thing was inoperative in just a few months. With my OWC drives, I know that the drive mechanism inside was constructed by a reputable company that’s been around for a while, meaning that my data is in some more experienced hands.

Speaking of warranties, all OWC and Newer Technology drive solutions have a 3-year Limited Warranty. Its nice to know that they stand behind their products; I wasn’t so fortunate with that no-name drive. And if the drive solutions runs 3 years and 1 day past the warranty, before an unpleasant head crash? Those same name-brand drives often have warranties that extend past the OWC one; all I need to do is take it out of the case and work with the drive manufacturer.

Putting that “OWC hat” back on, I do have to say that we all take a lot of pride in our products. You don’t have to buy your external storage solutions from us, but we’re glad you do and we’re working every day to make your computing experience that much better.
