We’re home from the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show and while some might be a little worse for wear, it was a great show. Join us as we discuss what we introduced, what we saw, and what we think this year in electronics is going to bring.

OWC Radio is a monthly, forum-based podcast focused on the events and happenings in the Mac community. This week’s hosts are: OWC Grant, OWC Chris S., and OWC Mike H.

New OWC Jupiter mini-SAS Redefines Shared SAN Storage by Harnessing the Simplicity and Performance of mini-SAS Direct Attached Storage

Monday, January 9th, 2012 | Author: OWC NewsFeed

Other World Computing announced today its new OWC Jupiter mini-SAS scalable storage solution for small businesses and enterprises utilizing mission critical and creative applications. Built upon the proven mini-SAS interface for speeds up to 24Gb/s using just a single cable connection, the Jupiter family of racks, towers, and hubs combine the highest levels of data sharing performance with the simplicity of direct attached storage (DAS) at up to 5x lower cost of fibre channel infrastructures. The OWC Jupiter mini-SAS will be available by the end of March in a variety of configurations with 8TB Enterprise solution pricing starting at $3,995.00. During the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which begins tomorrow in Las Vegas, Nevada, OWC will demonstrate the high performance of the Jupiter mini-SAS in its booth #5231 in the LVCC North Hall.

Centralized Storage = Higher Productivity

Jupiter mini-SAS is a centralized storage solution, which means data is stored in a single location and can be accessed by multiple workstations simultaneously. Sharing content streamlines workflows, eliminates bottlenecks, and the need to duplicate files. By eliminating the need to copy data to multiple users on DAS solutions or searching for files in multiple locations, Jupiter mini-SAS can dramatically increase productivity. Additionally, Jupiter mini-SAS can be configured to provide zoned/allocated drive access privileges so specific workstations and/or servers have exclusive access to specific drives or sets of drives. Last Chance to Vote for OWC

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011 | Author: OWC Chris S.

Well, we’re in the final stretch for this year’s “Visit Me at CES” video contest. Voting ends today, so if you’re waiting until the last minute to vote for us, you’d better act now! And for those who have already voted for us – you can go ahead and vote for us again!

All you need to do is:

  1. Go to the CES video contest page.
  2. Find OWC’s video – videos are apparently listed randomly, so you need to search for “CES: The Countdown” titled video.
  3. Click the Vote button by our video (you may have to register and/or log in first).
  4. Click the Vote button nine more times.

Contrary to our original post a couple of weeks ago it seems you can vote up to ten times per day, so with this being the last day, that’s ten more votes you can give us.

It’s Time To Vote Again…

Thursday, November 10th, 2011 | Author: OWC Chris S.

About this time last year, we asked you to vote for our submission in the “Meet Me at CES” video contest. Well, it’s that time again, and though the name has changed slightly (now it’s “Visit Me at CES”) the premise is the same: We need your votes.

Fortunately, helping us out is really easy to do:

  1. Go to the CES video contest page.
  2. Find OWC’s video – they appear to be listed randomly, so you may have to search a little.
  3. Click the vote button (you may have to register and/or log in first).

You can vote once a day, so – in the grand tradition of Illinois Politics - vote early and vote often. With your help, OWC will be featured on the front page of the CES web page for the month leading up to the expo.

Oh, and since the embedded video on the contest page is quite small, here’s a larger version for you to enjoy. Article Continues…

Play Blu-ray Movies on Your Mac Without Converting Them First.

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011 | Author: OWC Chris H.

Lots of people want to watch Blu-ray movies on their Macs. Until now, though, doing so required ripping the movies to your hard drive and playing them that way. Mac Blu-ray Player from Macgo is a movie player that plays back Blu-ray movies from the original source discs.

How does it work?

First you need a Blu-ray drive. Fortunately, OWC just happens to sell some. ;-)

Download & install the Mac Blu-ray Player application from Macgo.

After inserting a Blu-ray disc and launching the Mac Blu-ray Player application, you will be prompted to select your disc or a backed up .iso image. You must be connected to the Internet for the application to decrypt the disc for watching (a point brought up when this was discussed in OWC Radio, Episode #57). After the application scans the disc, it begins playback. Article Continues…

It’s been a while since we really drew attention to new additions to our Instructional Series of videos, but considering the requests we’ve been getting lately, we figured you may be interested.

We’ve added a total of six new videos to our DIY section, showing you how to upgrade the memory and storage on the 2011 mini and mini Server, as well as showing you how to install the Mercury Aura Pro Express in the 2011 MacBook Airs.

You can check out these new videos (and all out other ones, too) in our Tech Center, on our YouTube Channel, or in iTunes.

Getting Apple’s Goat?

Thursday, July 28th, 2011 | Author: OWC NewsFeed

This little video made its rounds through the blog team yesterday, and we decided to share it with our readers as well.

Comedian Mark Malkoff heard about all sorts of pets and activities being allowed in Apple Stores across the country, so he decided to see if he could find a limit to what they’d allow, culminating in him bringing in a live goat – and they let him do it! Maybe Apple learned a lesson from the 1945 Cubs.

Funny stuff, and a lot more entertaining than those YouTube videos of people dancing badly in front of an iMac…

The link is below. However, beware of the PG-13 title of the Web site; those who are über-sensitive to language may take offense to another version of the word “dang”.

Mark Malkoff: Apple Store Challenge

Of course, this also begs the question… what kinds of crazy things have you seen/done in an Apple Store?

Target Display Mode And Thunderbolt

Friday, July 1st, 2011 | Author: OWC Chris S.

Target Display Mode on the Late 2009 and 2010 iMacs was a pretty neat trick; you connected the iMac to another Mac via the Mini Display Port connector and the iMac’s display became a second monitor for the first mac while the system ran “headless” underneath it. When you unplugged the cable, the iMac’s display reverted back to the iMac itself.

The Thunderbolt port in the 2011 iMacs adds a couple of twists to this setup. First, when using Thunderbolt-equipped iMac as a display, you need to hit Command-F2 to switch the display between the iMac and the other Mac. This, however, is a relatively minor inconvenience or even a benefit, depending on how you generally use your iMac.

Another wrinkle comes in the form of what computer can connect to which iMac with which cable. To determine this we Article Continues…
