  • Hi,

We noticed this drive for sale on your site days before this actual product announcement, and have been looking forward to learning more.

With this new 1TB OWC 2.5” Mercury Electra 6G SATA SSD, we see that OWC is using a new, different flash controller, the Silicon Motion SM2246EN — in contrast with the SandForce 228x Series controllers which OWC employs in its other Mercury Electra and Mercury EXTREME Pro SSDs.

    You can anticipate our questions.

How does this relate to TRIM, when using this drive with OS X (10.9, 10.10) — and with other operating systems?

Notably, another SSD vendor that also uses the Silicon Motion SM2246EN, actually engineers its SSDs for Mac in a way that the drive identifies itself to OS X as an “Apple” SSD, and hence OS X automatically uses TRIM with that drive for optimal drive performance — no extra software or hacks needed. (That vendor has privately informed customers that a 1TB model is supposedly forthcoming shortly.)

With your new 1TB OWC 2.5” Mercury Electra 6G SATA SSD, “no extra software or hacks needed” either, according to your description.

Does OS X automatically use TRIM with this 1TB OWC 2.5” Mercury Electra 6G SATA SSD? If so, will that be reflected in the System Information report?

If OS X does not automatically use TRIM with this 1TB OWC 2.5” Mercury Electra 6G SATA SSD — will using “extra software or hacks” (or other operating systems) that enable TRIM on *all* installed non-Apple SSDs which support TRIM, actually degrade (or, possibly improve?) the performance and longevity of the 1TB OWC 2.5” Mercury Electra 6G SATA SSD?

We currently use OWC SSDs, anticipate purchasing more of them, and have been desperately needing an as-yet-to-be-announced “1TB OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro,” or functional equivalent, since the end of 2011. We check regularly for such a product. We will use that product both individually as boot drives, and in bootable and non-bootable software-based RAID 0 arrays, both internally with SATA 3, and externally over Thunderbolt, with various versions of OS X, and other operating systems.

We dislike the fact that, as Mac users with high performance needs, TRIM is still even an issue we need to be concerned about when buying and installing an SSD, or in using OWC SSDs in conjunction with other, non-Apple SSDs on the same system.

    Thanks!

    • PS. We will also manually configure the SSDs with 28% over provisioning, for optimal performance and longevity. This also contributes to our need for more and higher-capacity drives.

Too bad Viper turned out to be vaporware, at least so far.

    • Thank you for your interest in this drive. The SSD doesn’t identify as an Apple SSD, so OSX still doesn’t provide TRIM support for our 1TB 6G SSD. That said, while the controller has changed we still have the drive set up to not rely on TRIM to keep running just fine. • Thanks, Alex! Appreciate your response, which helps clarify matters. Wish the incompressible data rates were better. Hopefully MPG or Barefeets will benchmark soon.
