“We’ve been privileged to work with the Blackmagic certification program for over two years and have produced a line of SSDs that meets their users’ growing need for storage that is both economical and can stand up to really tough usage and environments,” said Larry O’Connor, Founder and CEO, Other World Computing. “Since Blackmagic’s certification of our Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD for the HyperDeck series and Cinema Camera, we have received certification for two new products – MultiDock and Production Camera 4K, the world’s most portable 4K digital film camera. We continue to design upgrades and new products to meet Blackmagic certification standards, to ensure our storage is as reliable as possible, so you can shoot, record and edit with confidence.”

  • This new OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD looks great for video. 4k? Nice. How about music production?

OWC Mercury Extreme Pro or Samsung 850 Pro for streaming large complex music libraries? What SSDs do Hollywood symphonic composers use for their symphonic mockup libraries?

    I am thinking (512 Gb)
    • Samsung 850 Pro or EVO (price/performance)
    • OWC Mercury Extreme – certainly good
    • OWC Mercury Extreme Pro – intriguing? Is this better than 850 Pro?
    • I cannot afford the enterprise SSDs.

Is the dual write compression only in the initial writing of the data? Is the streaming uncompressed? Hollywood orchestral mockups require a crazy amount of constantly constantly changing sample streaming — thus quick read access. SSDs are highly regarded.

May upgrade my OWC Thunderbay 4 currently with standard 7200s (love it) or may purchase the OWC Thunderbay 4 mini – to isolate the music production. Will connect to iMac27.

    Thanks – John

    • Hello John,

The OWC Mercury Extreme Pro is a very high quality SSD. This SSD was made for the purpose of professional audio, video, photography, and graphic production. They are also very good for streaming large files.

With this Mercury Extreme Pro SSD, streaming with this SSD is compressed when writing, and uncompressed again when reading.

      • Thanks for the update Dyllon. Both the Extreme Pro SSD and the Thunderbay 4 mini are high on my list.

Are there any new products introduced at NAB 2015 that would provide similar or better solutions for music streaming? The Viper Pro? How would it be different? — thanks

Should I be posting these questions elsewhere?

        • The Viper Pro is an amazing pro-level performance external device. It has the capability of supporting multi-stream, uncompressed 4K video and bus-powered daisy chains. This will be available in 4TB and 8TB capacities, dual Thunderbolt 2 interfaces, and speeds up to 1350MB/s. The main differences you will see in the Viper Pro is the capacity and speeds compared to the Mercury Extreme Pro SSD and the capacity compared to the Thunderbay 4 Mini.
