Women in Tech: What We’re Reading

PrintThrough our Women in Tech series on the Rocket Yard, we’ve discussed the lack of diversity in the technology industry with women comprising 51 percent of the workforce, yet only 26 percent of tech professionals.

In some of our own reading this week, we’ve come across a series by CNET titled “Solving for XX”. The special report explores “what people and companies are doing to make the tech industry more diverse, more equitable and more welcoming to women.” Here are just some of the articles featured in the series:

‘The Slights Add Up’
In a commentary piece, Jason Hiner asks you to consider the subtle and often subconscious ways in which women are overlooked, devalued and underestimated in the business world.

‘Girls Just Want to Code’
Getting young girls interested in code is only half the battle, say authors Donna Tam and Nick Statt. The key is to keep them interested through college as too few are graduating with STEM degrees.

‘It’s Not Women Who Are the Problem’
Silicon Valley’s male-dominated culture could cost the technology industry the thing it values most: innovation, writes Connie Guglielmo.
