Star Trek Fan Film, Roddenberry’s Floppy Disks Make Headlines

Star Trek has been in the news quite a lot lately. Not only is 2016 the 50th anniversary of the franchise’s first TV series, but last month we were also treated to the first trailer for the next official Star Trek movie, which hits theaters in July.

And now, even fans of the franchise are making the headlines. But then again, they’re not your average Star Trek fans. In fact, these fans are currently making a movie of their own set in the same universe as the popular franchise.

The upcoming fan film, which is titled “Axanar”, has raised more than $1 million through crowdfunding and the quality of the project has caught the attention of Paramount Pictures and CBS. The two companies have sued the “Axanar” creators for copyright infringement.

However, “Axanar” producer Alec Peters points out that the while the film aims for a studio-quality look, the film will be totally non-commercial and is simply a love letter to the franchise.

Here is a description of the film from www.axanarproductions.com:

“Axanar takes place 21 years before the events of “Where no Man Has Gone Before”, the first Kirk episode of the original Star Trek. Axanar is the story of Garth of Izar, the legendary Starfleet captain who is Captain Kirk’s hero. We met Garth in the third season TOS episode Whom Gods Destroy. Kirk called Garth the role model for all future Starfleet Officers. Garth charted more planets than any other Captain and was the hero of the Battle of Axanar, the story of which is required reading at the academy. This is that story.

Axanar tells the story of Garth and his crew during the Four Years War, the war with the Klingon Empire that almost tore the Federation apart.  Garth’s victory at Axanar solidified the Federation and allowed it to become the entity we know in Kirk’s time.

It is the year 2245 and the war with the Klingons ends here.”

As fellow fans of the Star Trek franchise, OWC is a proud sponsor and supporter of “Axanar” with its gear being used to help bring the film to life. Here is a clip from the movie:

Roddenberry’s floppy disks
New films aren’t the only interesting news for fans, however. DriveSavers recently announced that the company has recovered nearly 200 floppy disks belonging to Star Trek’s creator – the late Gene Roddenberry. Check out the news release for more interesting details on how DriveSavers extracted the data on the disks, which were used with custom-built computers and operating systems.

  • So FREAKIN’ AWESOME!!!! Great concept and I can’t wait to see the finished product. I wish I had the creative genius to pursue a project like this one. I hope there is not a copyright battle because this effort looks to extend and honor the world of Star Trek.
