In a recent article titled Music Studio Construction: Amping Up the Storage Matt Vanacoro writes about the goal of taking a home or project studio to the next level. And when it came to editing, Vanacoro has a wide range of needs. The storage solution would need to be fast, portable, have a high enough capacity. For this, Vanacoro employed the OWC ThunderBay 4 mini.

“For current working projects, I’d want the fastest possible drive system I could get. It would have to be large enough to accommodate the huge 4k projects coming my way, but I couldn’t skimp on speed,” Vanacoro said. “I decided to go with the OWC ThunderBay 4 mini. It’s a pretty amazing RAID enclosure that works with 2.5” drives. In this case, I loaded it up with 4 2 TB SSD drives in a RAID 0 format. This gives me an absurd amount of speed (1300 MB/s) with a decent amount of space (8 TB) to work with.”

Producer, director, editor and consultant Larry Jordan recently got his hands on the new Mercury Elite Pro Dual mini and put it through its paces for a thorough review as well as testing and benchmarks.

Jordan came away impressed with the versatility of the MEPD mini in addition to its performance.

“The light weight, small size, high speed and configuration flexibility of the Mercury Elite Pro Dual Mini, combined with its ability run directly off the battery of the computer make it very attractive for all HD, 2K and some 4K editing provided you have a computer with a USB-C port,” Jordan said.
