Video Commentary: Thinking Differently on 2016 MacBook Pro, Part 3

In October 2016, Apple announced new MacBook Pro models featuring an all new thinner design, a controversial decision to replace all the ports with Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports, and a much higher pricing structure. A large backlash ensued among the Mac faithful, while at the same time Apple experienced more sales of the new pro laptops than any before. So what gives? Are the laptops terrible, or are they as great as their sales would indicate?

Now that the initial hype has passed, it’s the perfect time to explore what’s new, what’s hot, and what’s not — along with some alternate ideas you may want to consider.

About the Video:
This video was shot in UHD 4K using Panasonic LUMIX G7 mirrorless cameras at OWC’s Design and Engineering Studios in beautiful downtown Austin, Texas, and edited in Adobe Premiere Pro on a Mac Pro upgraded with 64GB of OWC memory and OWC storage.

And be sure to check out Part 1 and Part 2!

  • As a small business owner who lives in the country, I can agree with some things in your series. The smaller hard drive in the laptop and external drives for project idea I like. However, you didn’t discuss ethernet, which I use to link three together or that using the cloud is really only using someone else’s rack server. Depending on the work you do, using someone else’s rack servcer is not acceptable and I would not want my financials out there for a hacker.

I do like the OWC dock I Purchased to go with the refurb laptop as it had the ports that I needed. One more USB port would have been great, but I manage.

Overall good series, with lots to think about.

    • You’re right, I didn’t mention ethernet specifically by name but it’s in the shots where all the cables can’t connect to the laptop. I was trying to stress that practically any connection you need to make, no matter what, will require some type of adapter or dongle. I also didn’t really mention the cloud as you’re right, it’s not for everyone. While it can be perfect for others, the topic of cloud storage could be another entire series onto itself :)

Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for watching.
