Apple to Temporarily Allow Repairs of Newly Vintage iMac Model

Owners of a mid-2011 iMac might be surprised to find out that the model will be classified as “vintage” next month. Vintage Apple products are those that have not been manufactured for more than 5 and less than 7 years ago. Apple discontinues hardware service for vintage products in most cases.

According to MacRumors, however, Apple internally announced a pilot program permitting Apple Stores and authorized service providers to continue repair services on 21.5” and 27” iMac models from mid-2011. The program will run in the U.S. from March 1 until August 31, 2018. You can view Apples updated list of vintage and obsolete products here: support.apple.com/en-us/HT201624

It’s unclear whether the program will grow to include other Mac models, but in the meantime, you can make upgrades of your own to your “vintage” or “obsolete” Mac with the MacSales.com My Upgrades tool.

By upgrading your “vintage” or “obsolete” Mac, you’ll not only bring a new world of performance possibilities, you’ll also avoid unnecessarily creating electronic waste. You can even purchase Used Macs from MacSales.com and get a new-to-you Mac while saving money. Used Macs from MacSales.com are OWC Warranted and backed by OWC’s expert support team.

  • Does anyone know if this six month pilot extension program is legitimate? I just contacted Apple Support concerning an issue with my 2011 iMac and they told my iMac is vintage and no longer covered. I mentioned this 6 month pilot extension program for my iMac and they told me that they are unaware of any such program. ???

  • As someone still rocking a mid-2011 iMac, this is depressing news! Ha! I still love my 2011 iMac. It performs great. And I’ve added RAM from OWC to make sure that it keeps serving me well!

  • My 27″ iMac late 2015 has developed little bubbles(?) under the screen glass about 1 or 2mm. Apparently there is a tiny air pocket. If I press on the spot, it disappears for awhile. Over time the number is increasing.

  • I love my mid-2010 iMac 21.5″ w/12gRam & recently installed a new SSD from MacSales. She purrs!

  • I really envy Americans such a great upgrade place as OWC. Mostly postage to New Zealand is too high for me to buy here. But I got my external optical drive here, mainly because I wanted a solid desktop one not a flimsy look thin thing. Apple sell their external optical drive here for NZ$129 with free delivery and the OWC product cost me NZ154.20 (inclusive of postage).
