  • Sorry to bump an old comment thread, but still looking for the perfect answer to the quietest RAID solution. I think the ultimate answer would be a two slot Voyager dock with RAID hardware and no fans at all.

    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/NewerTech/Voyager/Hard_Drive_Dock

A open mesh coated/insulated wire cage that fastened on top and protected the bare drives sticking out of the Voyager dock, but did not stop air flow, would be the finishing touch. This would be relatively cheap to manufacture too.

  • Hey Larry and Gang.

You wanna own the home and small office RAID market, even more than you do now? Make a RAID box that YOU CANNOT HEAR. One that I can have in my bedroom and not hear the fan even when it is quiet, or next to me in my office without the noise pollution.

I already have a Drobo with four Western Digital Green 1TB drives, as well as a couple of your Mercury Elite-AL PRO boxes (which are bullet-proof RAID externals), and the drives themselves are very quiet, but the fan noise from EVERY ENCLOSURE I have ever owned is too loud for certain locations.

You can google the intertubes and see that a almost silent RAID box is in high demand, and nobody is making one that truly gets the positive reviews/ratings for actually being quiet (some claim to be quiet, but user reviews differ).

Again, the problem is not the slugs, the WD green HD slugs are the quietest HDs I have ever used, it is the enclosure fan that we would pay extra to silence!

    • We hear you Greg (sorry for the pun) but anytime you start putting in multiple drives into an enclosure, it is very advisable to have a fan it there to deal with the heat generated.

But we have designed our OWC and NewerTech enclosures to be among, if not the quietest on the market. Check out these dB stats on the RAID 1 Guardian MAXimus:

      http://www.newertech.com/nwt_whisper_test/nwt_whisper_gmax.html

We’ve also done some dB tests on our miniStack…

Sounds like (there’s that pun again!) we need to get back to these measurements for more of our solutions then!

  • PLEASE, make a mini version of this for 2x 2.5″ drives in RAID0 with eSATA! It’d be kinda like the G-Technology G-RAID Mini2 (now without the 2) but no drives, and hopefully cheaper! You could equip it with dual SSDs!
