  • Oct 18, 2018 – Hello everyone. I have a late 2014 Mac Mini. Would it’s thunderbolt ports be completely compatible with this device?

  • I would buy one immediately if it had a Thunderbolt 2 port for all such gear I bought from OWC

  • Is there any Thunderbolt 3 dock (or duplicator/splitter) with more than two Thunderbolt 3 ports? I mean, to increase the total number of functional Thunderbolt 3 ports on Mac. Much as can be done with USB ports. Any technical problem with that? Intel limitation? Thanks.

    • I have struggled with this issue for some time. The short answer is you cannot split the Thunderbolt port like you can a USB using a hub. The TB channel starts at the PCIe bus inside the respective PC, and connects like FireWire – meaning it daisy chains devices. Recently I built a windows based TB machine using a PCIe card that had two TB ports, but this was tied directly into the machine bus and disabled one NVMe SSD channel as it -took over the channels it needed on MOBO for TB. So short answer is if you want additional devices, make sure they come with with two ports, one for input and the other for downstream devices. Or get a Mac Pro or recent iMac with multiple TB ports at source.
