OWC VP of Software Engineering Talks APFS, T2 Chip at MacSysAdmin 2018

Watch Tim Standing, VP of Software Engineering for OWC, talk about APFS at the 2018 MacSysAdmin Conference — including the internals of Apple’s new file system, APFS, and how the T2 chip (found in the iMac Pro and 2018 MacBook Pro) is used for storage.

  • Great talk, Tim. I had a couple of power failures (my landlord’s grey water pump shorting out) that completely trashed my RAiD5 volume (softRaid Thunder Bay mini with 4x HDD).

When i contact SoftRAID I was instructed to buy disk doctor (iirc) and a UPS. It kind of annoyed me that I was forced into this kind of solution ion, and that even without power outages I was constantly getting write warnings in the softRaid error notifications. But at least I understand a bit of the how and why now. It put me off RAID5 for now, it’s just been sitting there and I’m using SSD even for short video work.

    • The volume corruption is a “feature” of HFS+ and is fixed with APFS. Unfortunately, APFS has some major performance problems when used with HDDs – it’s fine with SSDs. Hopefully, Apple will provide a solution for APFS on HDDs in the near future.

I would like to know if the write errors you were experiencing were while using DiskWarrior or during normal use. The former is a bug in DiskWarrior that we are aware of, the latter is something I would want to investigate.

  • A shame there is still lack of full APFS documentation, which prevents DiskWarrior 6 release to rebuild APFS disks. That is a deal breaker to upgrade from macOS 10.12 Sierra.

    • MaX et al.

I agreed with you completely until very recently. This is from Alsoft’s website:
“The next major release of DiskWarrior will include the ability to rebuild APFS disks. Apple has recently released the APFS format documentation. Our developers are now using that documentation to update DiskWarrior to be able to safely rebuild APFS disks.” Ergo, I check their site weekly for DW 6.

      Cheers
